ADS L Series 2-Way Bookshelf Speaker Comparision

I also use the smaller 400's, with a 10" powered a/d/s/ sub. No complaints at all with that combo, but I wouldn't disagree that w/o the sub they come across a being a light-duty bookshelf. The original L400 have a noticeably larger cabinet and the additional air volume makes an audible difference in bass response/room presence.

I also have a pair of L7es. I got them at an estate sale without grilles. Perfect condition otherwise. Weird grilles. Thank god the tweeter dome isn't sticky or they'd be covered in dust. I A/B'd them against my original L400s and the top end fell a bit flat for me. Bottom end was about the same, but I'm a top end kinda guy, so they went in the closet and were replaced by the Frankensteined L400s.

Weird, my L7e are not flat at all compared to the L400. To be honest I’m not sure which I like better.

Whichever pair I’m listening to at the time is my favorite.:)

How did you modify you L400?

If you're talking about the Frankenspeakers, I bought them that way from a Goodwill. Speculation is that the original owner blew the woofers and there were no more 7" woofers to replace them. As you can see in the picture, the adapter plates are professionally made and the 6"ers are ADS replacements. Pity, they just can't handle the job bass wise. I would replace them but I have a perfectly good working pair, and I appear to be the only person on AK who has a pair.

long dead thread but Id like to breath new life into them. The ADS L7e and ADS B7 are super similar same drivers i belive xover design and box volume just the L7e is less utilitarian .. I digress, the point is this the 206-0122 tweeter is a Ferrofluid tweeter and I have found although not as old as some if they are left to sit to long the ferro fluid will give you a bit of low output on these tweeters (the 206-0122) is used in many other speakers as well (B7, B8, M9,, CM7, 6 , L7e 8e, 9e) C400i 750/ii M9/90, Sat 5,6,& 7) and i have found these super easy to replace ferrofluid on and some it made no difference but i had a pair of M9s and the higher end of the B7s sounded so much more "ADS" to me until i redid the ferro in the M9s .. and pop side to side low output gone

i didn’t modify them. I think somewhere along the way, whoever owned them blew a/the woofer/s and there were no more 7” woofers available to replace them. Someone at ADS made off center plates to which 6” woofers were mounted and placed slightly off center in the original 7” slots in these L400s. Quite unique looking, but they have an obvious lack in bass when compared to 7” woofers.

Interesting they did this. I've been looking for a pair of L400 woofers or even a pair of 7" woofers from a set of 700's, but they just never come up. Look every few days on the regular sites.

I have a pair of metal-cab 300 that I've yet to take out of the closet to hear... got them a couple years ago. Guess it's gettin' time for a listen.

They come up quite often on eBay. I think by the late 70s/early 80s the 7" woofer was gone.
