ADS L1230 opinions

I first listened to the larger version L1530's. The L1530's were in a huge barn, and sounded great, in a smaller room they would sound slightly constricted. I thought that the L1230, with the slightly smaller woofers, would be perfect for a living room then. Dead wrong.

I don't normally pan a speaker, but in over 7 years of collecting and almost 100 pairs cycled through the house, they were the only pair I hooked up, used for one night, then immediately put up an ad to sell them. They aren't worth it. I really can only explain it this way, if the cabinets, tweeters and mids are almost identical for both the L1230 and L1530, one size of woofer has to be wrong. The L1530 is the best of the lot.

I've owned both the 1230's and 1530's and they both sounded great in my 15x18 livingroom.

The 1530,and 1230 dont have nearly identical cabinets . 1530's are much larger.

While they both sounded great. the 1530's went lower with more authority
and sounded more balanced overall.

I would not mind owning either pair again, i actually was kicking myself after selling the 1230's but needed to to fund another purchase.

Then i found the 1530's while looking for another pair of the 1230's and was really happy.

I only parted with the 1530's recently because of a chance to trade them for one of my dream speakers the Klipsch K-Horn. There are still times that i wish i had the 1530's instead of the horns :sigh:.

I got 500 for my 1230's and they werent perfect, new owner loves them to this day.

I;d say buy em and try em, they could be longtime keepers.:thmbsp:

Oh, and make sure the fuses are not blown(and that the biamp switches are in the proper position). the 1230's i bought sounded fine at sellers house but sounded like crap at first when i got em home, turned out the fuses had blown during transport, a couple new ones and they were singing properly again.

1230s are are excellent speakers. In really good shape worth $400 or more. Anything less is a score. Finish, condition etc all are important and you're really not giving us much info.

Well, the ad only gives so much info. Luckily, the pics give a rough idea of condition...

Do a search for L1230 on AK and you will find lots of opinions and information. I had a pair and regret selling them. I sometimes found the bass to be too much, but that was blessing as much as curse. They were unhappy when I used an underpowered amp, but shined with a bit more power - all under 100 wpc. I sold mine for a little over $300, but they had some cosmetic issues and I liked the buyer.

They look pretty nice and if the only issue is the dust caps I'd say go for it. I absolutely loved my 1530s and really regret selling them.

I would also suggest you give them a try. I sold my 1530 and as audiomagnate regret it every day.

took the words right out of my mouth.
this ad is all i have to go on as well.

think i'll offer him 300. the two pushed in dust caps are eye sores and i'd
have to get those pulled out somehow(do these have vented pole pieces?)

already have 810/2($250) 780/2($300) L400($100) L300 (long term loaners)
so it's not like i'm ADS poor!

i must say the 810's are head and heels above the 780's to my ears.
still i'm trying to afford an amp to really drive them with as i understand
they really come to life with "proper" power.i have a older 3B that needs work.
popping internal fuses on start-up and could be pricy to repair on my budget.

The dust cap dents can be easily pulled out with a vacuum cleaner. Just be careful and hold the woofer in place with one hand while applying the vacuum suction tube to the dent.

I have a pair of L1230s and had to do this same fix. Paid a lot less for mine, but I don't plan to ever sell them. If you can get these for $300 or less you will have done well.

Replacing the cloth is not simple. My wife and I did my pair, but she sews pretty well. You could take them to a local shop that does reupholstery and am sure they could do the job. Fabric can be found at JoAnn's Fabrics or the like. The one near me carries black speaker fabric.

I paid $450 for my 1230`s and consider them one of my best audio purchases . They were in really nice condition so I consider it was a good deal . I think with a little effort you could recover the grills yourself . Just make sure everything else is working . Good luck .

made him an offer he could refuse..and did!
200 mile + round trip for me which must be factored...

after refoaming a pair of Infinity RS3000's yesterday the wife ask me-
"how many speakers do you need?"

answer: "but i only have x amount in them!"
(NOT CERTAIN SHE BOUGHT IT...):nono:

:bs:
i sort of lowballed the guy but only because i'm poor.
i offer cash and L400's plus another 'deal' but he was not interested.
it's cool. picked up a pair of nice Bose 8.2's today

You should have got the 1230's instead. Great imaging speaker but not great for shaking the walls, if that is your thing. I had a set and loved them.

wasn't exactly a choice-
a/d/s/ guy seems firm and not in the mood (yet) to negotiate...
preference was of course with the 1230's-
bought the 8.2's to resell but the 1230 may have been keepers
if they sounded ALL that much better than my 810's...

the Bose sound pretty good and the cabinets are 9 0f 10.

Have A pair of 1230's and need two woofers. I believe they are 8" anyone know the part # ?? I hear there rare. Anybody have A pair??
