Hi,

I recently inherited a pair of ADS L1290 speakers with an ADS R1 Amplifier, and I'm really loving them. However, I noticed that the previous owner screwed the grilles into the speakers in the front and then just let them sit for a long period of time. They were screwed in way too tight, so the domes of the mids got stuck to the grilles. They seem to sound fine right now, but I fear if I try to pry the grilles off, it will damage the mids even further because they are stuck pretty well. I can try and take pictures, but it will probably be difficult to get a good picture down the top of the grille.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, should I try to take them off, or just leave them?

perhaps there is a spray you can use. But i never had those speakers. So it may be better to wait for someone better experienced with them speakers. But i would pry them off slowly. But wait.

The sticky domes are notorious! I had not taken my grills off my L1090s for a couple of years when I notice a Bic pen was stuck to one mid range. How long it had been there I have not clue! Speaker sounded fine to my 50+ old ears.

Anyway, I used a hair dryer to warm up the glue and it came right off with careful application of pulling pressure.

That would be my suggestion as well.

IIRC the R1 is ~35WPC and not a good match for the 1290's if you are going to push them.

I was thinking of that as well, but I think part of the actual dome might be attached to the grill. So I'm afraid pulling it off it might rip the dome in half. I'm not an expert in speakers, so correct me if I'm wrong here, but would that render the mid useless?

Sorry, again I'm pretty new to the whole speakers scene, but is that because it won't be able to make them as loud as they can get? Or is it because this amp isn't good for these speakers? It seems to be able to get them pretty damn loud, I feel like any louder might end up making me deaf, and would definitely annoy the neighbors

I was able to take a couple of pictures of the speaker that was better off. It was a little tricky to take a good photo with the grill on

The first image is from above at an angle so you can see it from the side, the second is from directly above.

The last image is of the other speaker, which I think is a bit worse off. The grill was so close it was pushed against both the mid AND the tweeter. I managed to get it off the tweeter and hold it off with a felt washer. You can kind of see that there's bits of grass or something stuck to the mid, and I think the dome is more damaged as well.

The stuck drivers are probably not working to well being stuck to those metal grills.
The coating on the mids and tweeters is a water soluble cellulose. Applying a small amount of water by way of an artists brush should soften the coating enough to pull away.
