ADS L690

Super Member
I have a pair of ADS L690 speakers, one of the woofers has begun to act as if the surround is loose or a tear in the cone. I pulled the driver and can't find any problems, surrounds tight no tears. I was looking on line for a new woofer or info on what to try, cannot find a woofer for this model, or much info at all. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks John

Great speakers that image well and have nice bass for their size. Check where the surround joins the basket, check for floppy tinsel leads, and also try reinstalling the woofer rotated 180 degrees. The super compliant suspension tends to settle after about 25 years.

I'll try checking again and rotate them 180 degrees, if that doesn't work I'll try contacting Richard. Hope I can get it worked out I really like these speakers. Thanks guys, John

Fear not, Richard is the man. His prices are fair and hes total 100% professional. His turnaround time is fantastic.

Well pulled the woofer and it looks like it's the coil, measuring in the K ohm range, sent an email to Richard. Thanks for the tip. John

Just got the woofers back from Richard. They look like new and sound great. He didn't just send an email telling me what was wrong, he sent pics showing the problems, from the time I sent them to the time I got them back was just a week. You don't get that kind of quality work and customer service much any more. He is a good guy and a real pro.

About how much did the repair cost? I'm looking at a pair of L690s for $120 but the guy says they both rattle at any volume...wondering how much I should try to talk him down, knowing how much it might cost to fix.

From what I understand, and found out while researching the L570/2's I have is that the earlier versions used an aluminum tube to wrap the voice coil on to.
They tend to be a bit fragile and are easily damaged if they bottom out or over extend. The later versions used a plastic tube. The L570/2's I was given had a blown woofer. It was replaced with the earlier L570 woofer. The only difference is the dust cap size and material the coil tube was made of. The replaced woofer from the L570 has the aluminum coil tube. I can't hear a difference. The plastic tube was used due to being a tougher material. Specs are the same for both. This may apply to other models as well where there is a series 1 and two.
