ADS L710 vs L810 & L730

I own a nice pair of ADS L710's. I'm curious how the L810 compares as well as the L730. Both bigger speaks. No doubt the L810 has deeper bass but what else? The literature suggests the L730 images, a shortcoming of the L710 and L810 maybe. I'd appreciate any thoughts from those who have owned these models.

btw, I'm powering with Marantz 2275.

Well, I sold the 710 and 810 back in the day. All of us at that store thought that the 710 had a more neutral balance. The 810 was overblown in the bass region consequently causing the mids to sound muddy. Just my $0.07 ( $0.02 ajusted for inflation ).

The vintage Marantz receivers aren't very fond of pushing 6 and 4 ohm loads. Even my 2325 will only push my 710's at low volume levels so be careful if you go with a 4 ohm set.

+1:yes:

I have owned a pair of ADS/Braun L-710A's since 1973. I also owned, for a short time, a pair of 810's. 'nuff said

I have had the L810 for quite a few years and they can be a little particular as to what music they really like to shine with. I have not had the experience of muddy mids. Getting them up on stands and setting up a sweet spot is a big help. They, while fairly efficient, enjoy having a pile of power behind them.

The L710 is a truly remarkable speaker for its size. I have a pair setup in a very small alcove overlooking the lake at the cottage and spend many nights in awe of how they sound as the sun retreats for another day..

I have never heard them directly compared to L810, L880 or any other ADS speaker. However, they are really a fine speaker for lower level, close in listening.. I do not think I would choose them for loud listening in even a mid sized room, though.. It is, what it is.. I will never sell them. There is always someplace they will fit. One of the few speakers I can say that about out of the too many speakers I own.

I like my 730's but my evaluation is incomplete as I have only owned them for a couple of weeks. I finally got them up on stands and the imaging is very good. Bass was a bit boomy when they were on the floor but on the stands and further from the wall and they sound more balanced. I am still messing with placement in my room but so far am very happy.

Havent heard the 730 but my favorite ADS bookshelf is the L-780, an 8" vertically aligned 3-way. ADS hit the bullseye with these IMO.

Yeah, 780s are really nice and balanced. They were my first pair of ADS and I traded them for 810s because I heard so much praise for the 810. I was really disappointed. The 810 have a base hump. I'm currently having issues with my 710s (see my thread) but so far they're more balanced.

...but, I have to mention that my monster 910s blow them all out of the water. They are heavenly.

I liked the earlier L630 better than the L730. Both are the same size and driver size and configuration. L630s are much rarer and command a higher price.

The L880 is the same size and driver config. and a different size midrange. I like this one as much as the L630, perhaps better.

L810s have a slight bass hump and I don't like the side by side mid-tweet arrangement.

The L1230s and L1090s and L1290s are a step above all mentioned, and worthy the extra ducats.

thanks. let us know how your opinion of them evolves.

910's are a sore topic with me. I came very close to picking up a minty pair but in the end couldn't do it because of the size. not wife friendly.

OK, this is an old thread but still worth contributing for the sake of reference. My ADS bug started with the L-810, paired with a Yamaha CR 2040 @ 120 wpc. My friends and I were all pretty blown away by that system, never had any issues with "bass boom" being a bass player I actually might have liked them a bit more boomy, but I was using the clean sound of a Yamaha and they are notorious for their crisp, clear and not bass forward sound. So maybe that was why, I absolutely loved those speakers, sadly sold them away and until recently found some ADS speakers to rediscover, 6 sets now, all different. No L810's as of yet, but would fully entertain getting a set.

As I type I am being entertained by some L400's powered with an NAD D3020, playing music from the laptop. Very nice, back to the L810, three of my friends were inspired to become ADS owners after experiencing the L810, one friend in particular bought a set of the version II's? They were the first generation with the metal grills and the rounded corners, very beautiful cabinets, we did side by side comparisons with my standard black walnut cabs, squared corners, and cloth grills, and we both agreed that for whatever Inexplicable reasons my older 810's sounded better. After a month or so, he took his back and traded up to the L910's which we both loved.

I was feeling that the L810's seem to garner some bad press, mostly about the bass boom thing, they are excellent sounding speakers, and can one can always back off the bass parameters to get the better balance of frequencies you desire. There are a couple sets for sale here locally and the listings got my interest, and got me back on AK to read others experiences with them and I discovered this thread.

Just my uninformed inkling, since have never heard 810's. I've only heard L880's and L980's. Would imagine 810's would be a sideward move. I've had nostalgia for JBL Lancer 44's I started with, but think be disapointed with today. I've thought a possible progression from ADS, might be Cantons. But this is your thread, sorry, I digressed.

Personally, I'm a fan of the bigger midrange driver in the older 710 and 810. I don't think the 1.5" is the "improvement" that ADS deemed it. On the flip side, that newer single woofer of the 730, I thought, WAS an improvement.
The 3/4" tweeter in the new generations is supposed to reach higher, but after working in automotive in an era where no one wore ear protection, it's not like I could hear the difference.

I've only owned two pair of 810s and one pair of 780s. I still have the 780s in my house.
Don't you miss the all-around bigger sound of the 810's? At one of the steak/liquor/speaker-fests at my place, fellow AK'r, NerdoRama, brought over a pair of 810's. Although I was told that my smaller, fresher (Richard So refurbed) tweeter had a slight edge, I thought that the 810's filled the room better, without the boominess commonly associated with them.
Although the 780's are going in a relatively small room, I've still bought the parts to make a subwoofer to go beneath each of them.

If I didn't have other speakers, I'd consider the 810s for keepers. I had no problem with them. The 780s simply suit my office better.

Hello,
Another L710 owner, happy with them since 1984. I also own L1090/2, which I recently picked up from a CL listing. Have also owned L400 and L420. I have never heard L810s; always wondered if the bass hump was eliminated when ADS changed the crossover with series 2 (going from 2.5 mH and 90 mFd in the woofer circuit to 3.0 mH and 100 mFd).

My L710s still have the main room prime spot - the L1090/2s are down in the man cave. The 1090s are slightly appearance challenged; next years project. Sonically they are the winner, more bass extension and better imaging. But the L710 does hold up well enough.

Glenn
