ADS L810 Re-Cap or Replace X-Over

Recapp, unless the you know how to redesign the crossover to suit the ADS. I have no clue of those crossover points on the Dayton be suitable.
 
Yes, just a simple recap is probably all they need. That replacement crossover was not designed for those specific speakers, meaning they will not drop in and sound as good as the original.
 
I do not see that a re-design of the crossover would be required. I checked on this with PE. Their crossover is 500/4k @ 12db/octave. The original specs for the 810's are 550/4k @ 12db/octave. I can't see where going down in the neighborhood of a half step is going to create an issue.
 
There is just one electrolytic capacitor in the crossover of my 810s. That could be replaced, although it also may be still in spec. All the others are film, which should be fine.

Why do you think this needs to be done?

IIRC, ADS used quality film caps for mids/tweeters, and NPE for the woofers. The film should not need replaced. And, if you did replace them, there's a good chance you would alter the sound signature. Replacing the NPE may tighten up the bass, but won't change the overall sound.

Their crossover is generic while the crossover for a good speaker is tweaked for multiple issues specific to the drivers being used and the cabinet in which they are used. Sure it will work but you may or may not like the result. It will surely lower the value of the speakers. If you go with a generic at least save the original.

Very good information here. I heard another set of these over Thanksgiving in a similar setup as mine and they sounded quite different.

I have not opened these units up yet so I do not know what I may get into.

What amp/receiver are you using with yours, and what was being used with the other pair. (Similar power does not equate to similar quality.) Also, placement and room acoustics can make a big difference.

Have you checked to insure that all individual speakers are working? Use an empty paper towel roll to isolate and check the tweeters. Look into better (not necessarily expensive) interconnects and speaker wire. http://www.bluejeanscable.com/

Any way you could take your speakers over and hook them up to the other system?

Any other brand of speaker and I would say that the crossover could be the problem. With ADS, I'd say probably not. I'd look at everything else first, before tearing into the crossover.
 
Do not use an off-the-shelf crossover for your 810's! Those crossovers assume constant impedance across the individual driver's frequency range. Look at the impedance curve of any raw dynamic driver and you'll find the impedance changes with frequency. The crossover needs to be designed for the specific drivers (woofers, mids, and tweeters) mechanical and electrical characteristics used in the speaker system. Capacitors, inductors, and resistor values that are used reflect those parameters.

Replace aging capacitors and resistors with new film type caps and wirewound resistors of the same values as the originals*. DO NOT replace the inductors since they don't wear out and rarely, if ever, go bad.

* Capacitor voltage ratings aren't critical as long as they're over 100V. Resistors should be rated at 10 watts or more.

Of course, always verify the numbers from the markings on your caps, but the schematics may help if said markings can't be read.
As others have pointed out, ADS made some pretty good crossovers specific to the mids/tweets/woofs that were specific to enclosures. Second guessing with an aftermarket crossover would be like dropping a PInto engine in your Lotus.
ADS used quality film capacitors that have quite a long lifespan. With few exceptions, the only electrolytic capacitors in the ADS speakers were the ones parallel to the woofer. Replacing it is a snap with the right tip on your soldering iron. Even better, it's only $1.68,
