ADS L880 info?

Nice speakers at a great price! I have a pair of 880/2's in my garage system. They will likely stay there until I get around to refinishing them. In the meantime, they are probably my most listened to speakers.

Unfortunately, an upgrade would be something a little more painful than the $100 you shelled out, plus the $400 you'll shell out to Richard So to refresh the drivers, plus the value of the time you'll spend replacing the electrolytic cap(s) in the crossovers and cleaning up the woodwork on the 880's. I don't know if the 1230s would be an audio quality and size upgrade, which means that the 910s or 980s or 1530s would be the (ka-ching) next step up.

My 780/2's were my into to ADS and are what started this slight addiction. They are a bit weak on bass... not weak as in something is wrong but nowhere even close to my 880's. Did you find replacing the cap that parallels the woofers improved bass at all? My 520's have much better bass than my 780's, and the specs indicate that. The 520's are in a bigger cabinet, which probably explains it, but I'd like to improve the 780's if at all possible.
 
I’ve got L880/II and I love em. They make almost all music sound good. They aren’t as picky as others with source material. I wish they went down a few Hz lower, but all in all they are fantastic speakers.

It's funny you should ask that. I would've never expected it,but there was a slight improvement in the lower end with the replacement of that cap. Of course, the smaller woofer wouldn't measure up to the bigger one in the 880's. I also got an improvement to my ear replacing the electrolytics in the bandpass leg of the (780/2) crossover with polycaps. Listen carefully between your options if you look into this as my review panel was mixed on the poly cap thing.

Looks like I have another project! I'll try replacing that cap. My 780's need a subwoofer; my 880's benefit from one.
It's surprising how different the woofer baskets are between the 780 and 880 models, and not just in size. The 880 seems much more like a single woofer 1590 in a larger enclosure.

I made a pair of subwoofers that matched the width of the 780's, which made them the bitchinest pair of speaker stands ever. They're powered by a Kenwood power amp that I got from this hinky guy in the old Wigwam parking lot and controlled by a modern home theater receiver.
But the real beauty is that I was able to take the time to adjust the filling to get the subwoofer feel/sound/timbre as close to the 780's as possible, to my ear anyway.
