ADS L880 Placement

Hopefully I can get good bass when I get them closer to the back wall and between 12-15” off the ground. It also kind of seems you may need to push them a little for the good bass. Perhaps a tendency of the sealed cabinet? We’ll see.

Room is pretty dead. There is heavily padded swivel chairs with thick pillows on them at the first deflection. A large, heavily padded couch about eleven feet away and a 3’x3’ ottoman with a padded top in front of the couch. So I do think the room is ok. Side walls are about 4’-ish from the speaker positions on each side. My main speakers have a ton of bass, so I think the room is ok.

Interesting. I don't recall having to push too hard to get the L810 to produce, but I know that is also a complaint some have directed toward the L810....boomy. Not really my experience with them. I know the L880 is another animal, but I wouldn't think it would have low end challenges. I haven't had the L810 playing in a while. That is now officially on the to do list.

Hopefully you will find a sweet spot.

Oddly enough, when I bought my L880's, it was at a garage sale via CL. The owner stated that they were his extra speakers, and he didn't need them anymore, he had his go to pair in the house. And said he never cared for the sound of the 880. When I got home, and plugged them in. I too thought they were a bit dull sounding, only to find that all 4 fuses were blown, imagine my surprise when I put new and corrrect fuses in them, BLISS!!

L880 top and L980 bottom. Significant size difference between these two.

I grabbed some blocks from Menards and got them up to ear level when I’m on the couch. I definitely found the bass when I got them closer to the wall. I’m a bit limited as to how much movement I can do with them but it is an significant difference where they are now. They are a great sounding speaker for sure. Very tight and potent bass from such a small cabinet. I played some Ghost in the Machine by the Police and was in bliss. Incredible bass on that album and the little 880’s got it done for sure. I think I’m going to invest in the JBL L82 stands for these, they are keepers. I appreciate everyone who chimed in with pointers and input. Always helps.

Great choice in speakers with a big following. Absolutely love mine even though they aren’t as efficient as others I own, So with a little power behind them they open up. Make sure your tweeters are functional/ Original if the sound appears “ Dull”

I have my L880/IIs on the ADS F800 stands. I find the most important part of these is that they put the tweeters at approximate ear level for seated people in my living room. I would take the measurements from one of the earlier links and build your own stands. The prices for the F800 stands seems to be excessive on EBAY...

I agree. I saw some stands for the 810’s go for $200 plus and I just don’t feel they’re worth it. The only thing appealing to me is they’re designed for ADS speakers. However, they are almost forty years old and usually show it. I found the JBL FS-80 stands for their L-82’s seem to be perfect, from what the dimensions say. They’re expensive but get the speaker up 15”. That’s what they are at with the blocks I’m experimenting with and it sounds great. Right at ear level.

I got the JBL stands today. Here’s some pictures if anyone is interested. They work perfectly with 880’s.
