ADS L980 Biwire

I've recently bought a pair of ADS L980 speakers. The speakers are capable of being biamped and biwired. I would like to try biwiring them and see if there is a difference in sound quality. I don't have an owner's manual for speakers, but the back of speaker says there is a switch which must be put in left position when biwiring. I don't see the switch. Does anyone have any experience biwiring the L980's? Thanks in advance for any help.

The switch is probably located behind a slide-off plastic cover but It's not for bi-wiring. it connects the LF terminals DIRECTLY to the woofers. You don't want to do that unless you bi-amp with an external filter.

I don't know if you can bi-wire with the switch in "normal" position but I don't think you would hear any difference anyway.

Adam - thanks for the information. I found cover on rear of speakers and under the cover are the fuses and switch for biamping - in addition to high frequency switch for 1.5 Db or 0 Db. I'm going to follow your advice and not attempt to biwire these until I more thoroughly understand exactly how to do it right.

It would be fairly easy. Get an active crossover, couple amps. Hook your preamp to the active, active to the amps and amps to the speaker terminals.

You might even contemplate a tube amp for the HF section as many people like the effect of tubes on the sound (you might be well aware yourself, I don't know)

I'd suggest to you that doing the above would garner you a better net-improvement on your sound than simple biwiring.

I can't swear to it, but I believe the bi-amp configuration of the L980 is the same as the L1290. The full manual for that model is available at the site I mentioned earlier.

Greetings. I too have owned a pair of L980's since 1984 that go with my ADS Atelier components. I have misplaced my owners manual for the speakers and can't seem to access this brochure (below). I want to replace the fuses and not sure what the specs are for those. Could anyone provide some help on this?

mark5309 - I own L980 series II. See attached pics. Both the printed manual and fuse cover specify 1.6 AMP Max Type AGC/3AG for the tweeter, and 2.5 AMP Max Type AGC/3AG for the midrange. The fuses, if original and correct, will also have the value etched into the metal end caps.

*Additionally, note the manual settings for Biamplified operation (not Biwired).*
