Advent 2w

I need information on Advent 2w speakers from (I think) the 70s. They're approximately 18-20" high, 9" across and 6" deep. I'm going to put them in a system for a small room with a Marantz 2015 on a Nikko 320.

I was particularly interested in your frank opinions about build quality and overall sound. I realize each setup is different and there a lot of variables but some general info would be appreciated.

Hopefully they don't need to be refoamed as the correct surrounds are not available (AFAIK). You have to buy surrounds for the smaller Advent and cut them down to size. As far as sound, they do produce more bass than I had expected, however the weird 2x tweeter arrays results in some strange imaging. And at certain positions around the speaker, the tweeters can seem to overwhelm the woofer. Decent build quality which would be even better were they veneered in actual wood. I got mine for free.

General consensus is that the Advent/3 is much better although I cannot comment on the 2w since I have never heard them.

I have a pair on a shelf in my garage, where imaging is of no concern. I mostly play them when I am around the front of the house doing yard work or just tinkering around. For this application, they are excellent. They have good bass for such a compact speaker, and the highs are nice and crisp. I have always liked them, but I would want something better as my main stereo speakers.

I refoamed mine about 6 years ago I think, using the cut-and-seam method mentioned above. I wondered how well the seam in the surround would hold up, but it's never been a problem, even in the harsh garage environment. They have been exposed to high humidity and temperature extremes from the low 30's to 100 degrees, which has been heck on the vinyl veneer, but the speakers are still hanging in there.

Crossover Upgrade

Is there a crossover upgrade for these or does that funky tweeter sink them?

I was going to use rubber cement on the foam surrounds.

The stock speaker is IMO a waste of resources. Good box, great mid-woofer, miserable POS crossover. The dihedral tweeters (not too bad single for rescuing budget boxes with blown tweets, don't just throw them out) don't integrate with the woofer and just plain fail the potential of the mid-woofer. The Bose 301-II OTOH works better and would be preferable stockers but is not a great loudspeaker because of the not dissimilar tweeter arrangement.
E-waving the Advent-2 realizes the potential of the box-midwoofer combo, transforming the speaker into something that can be taken seriously and with pleasure. If you might be interested in a DIY speaker this is a perfect project.

Don't use that, the solvent may destroy the surround.
Use water base liquid latex as a preservative, available from some of the replacement surround suppliers for that purpose.
