Advent 300 recapping?

savv

Super Member
Recently, i experimented by using an Advent 300 as a preamp hooked up to a Hafler DH-200 as the power amp. Speakers are newly recapped AR 7 and the source is a Technics SL-D2 with new Shure M97xE cartridge with 10 hours on it.

I detect a certain harshness to the sound compared to my Pioneer SX 7730 which i love the sound. I tried using the Advent paired with the Hafler due to the touted phono section and the ARs needing more power to sound their best.

Will a recap of the Advent receiver yield marked improvement in the sound and remove the harshness or am I barking on the wrong tree? If recapping is the way to go, is there a site that sells the upgrade?

Thanks for your help in advance!

Might try using the tape out from the Advent to the Aux In on the Pioneer. This will allow you to use the Advent's phono section minus the rest of the tone circuit.

Didn't answer your question but If you end up preferring the sound of the Advent phone stage it might be worth pursuing the recap.

Below is a link to a site with information and repair services. They sell a transistor and cap kit.

I have a 300 that hasn't been restored. I like the phono section better than my Hafler DH101 but not as much as my Hafler Series 915 preamp.
