Advent-300 Receiver

Super Member
I’ve always wanted to pickup one of these gems to add too my Vintage collection. This is a physically mint one owner beauty that also appears to have been recapped. Hooked up to a set of B&W DM2000’s for kicks & giggles, It produced some amazing sound. The Advent 300 came with manual and brochure along with a letter the owner sent too Henry Kloss describing his favorably impressions of the receiver & preamp section. This one will be around for awhile that’s for sure!!

appears to have been recapped.
It looks to me like all original parts. Didn't see any caps that looked like they weren't original. All the semis and resistors I saw looked original. The filter caps are definitely original. (can't see doing a recap without changing those) Nice condition.

I went by online pictures of original caps vs what I’m seeing in this receiver now, Look different to me except the filter caps of course. Sounds great to my ears.

Very Cool! Love the letter
The owner printed out a lot of articles and included pictures of his personal setup using the Advent 300. Check these out.

Nice unit. I agree with sregor about the caps being original, at least most of them. My experience with partially recapping my unit (purchased new in 1977) was that the grey-bodied Unicon 1µ and 10µ caps were all way out of spec as well as being lossy and resistive, 40 years on. I believe several others have had the same experience. The Plessy caps fared better. There are many threads here about other improvements that can be made to these receivers, if you haven't looked yet.

I had a couple of these thru the years, both as is and recapped, and always enjoyed them within their capabilities. my garage system now is an Advent 450S which does fine.
Interesting pics of the previous owner’s setup. Not sure I like the 300 sitting on top of the TT, is that an AR?

Yeah apparently he babied this receiver! It’s in great condition physically. Maybe I’ll send it your way for a once over ? Lol

You're more than welcome to send it my way, but I don't work on electronics (or return stuff like that :D)

I have had about six of these. Always wanted to run it in the main system, so I did. Sounded glorious. Now the bad. Not enough inputs for modern day use, couldn't live with the FM drift that is inherant to all of them. Yes I have tried the fix, still drifts. All have been sold and I have made my repairman an expert on these.

My current collection of vintage audio gives me plenty of opportunity for FM listening & multiple outputs so it’s not a game changer to sell it, The Advent 300 audio history is reason enough to have at least one in my stable, That’s why I collect different brands. The Advent 300 will be paired with this: Advent 201 Cassette deck that’s in my Cassette deck collection

I had two 300's. One developed a bad filter cap buzz so I replaced them with slightly larger capacitance caps. That 300 sounded better as a preamp than the other.
Along with a Marantz 7T preamp I had (seller's regret) it was the best sounding preamp of the many I had. I had it driving all sorts of power amps over the years, and it always delivered. Amazing performance considering its price point.
