Advent 350?

Advent 201 Cassette Deck

Have a friend with a silver faced 300 receiver. I have Original Large Advents. I love them and my old Advent 201 cassette deck which has lasted all those years when newer decks dropped like flies. Please post some late era Advent history for the record and welcome to AK, you're among friends.

Great article on this deck: http://www.positive-feedback.com/Issue16/advent.htm

The OEM for the cassette deck mechanism was Wollensak. They should get credit for the long operating life of this deck. :thmbsp:

Advent 200 Cassette Deck

I love them and my old Advent 201 cassette deck which has lasted all those years when newer decks dropped like flies. Please post some late era Advent history for the record and welcome to AK, you're among friends.

The first Advent cassette deck was built by Nakamichi in Japan. Here are the details in an older AK thread: http://audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=83752&highlight=advent+200

Interesting, how Advent went from a Japanese OEM Nakamichi for the Model 200 to an American OEM, Wollensak, for the model 201. :yes:

It was because the Nak decks were a reliability nightmare. They had a team from Nak at Advent full time rebuilding the decks. Nak had real problems early in. Not only the 200 but the KLH 41. The 41 was one of the nicest decks you could ever want but the the DOA rate was almost 100%. After rebuilding they were very reliable so it was not the design but the QC and construction at Nak. KLH never quite recovered from that disaster.

Meanwhile a nicely performing 200 was not a bad machine by any means. Advent decided to go with the Wollensak transport has it was a proven heavy duty bullet proof machine that was withstanding the rigors of commercial use. The company had learned its lesson and was not about to release another lemon.

I've got an Advent 350 receiver that needs repair. Anyone have a source for the schematic? Anyone willing to scan it for me? I'd appreciate any help you can offer.

I have Good News two days after Good Friday, Goodwill and Value Village were open on Easter, and even better, Value Village had an Advent 350! It's a REAL beater, the tuning dial is broken, volume pot feels loose and is probably broke, and it's got a lotta scratches, no rubber feet and some dents in unlikely places. But it was at a near-giveaway price, and I figure if only the power amp works it would be worth much more than the asking price. The pre-out to amp-in jumpers were missing, so it's clearly "not working" though I don't know if Value Village tries to test things anyway. But this Advent model looks like something worth being made to rise again (okay, that's all the Easter puns I got).

I was surprised to see "A D V E \ T" on the side, I'd never even heard of an Advent receiver. The next thing I noticed was this thing is HEAVY. It's fairly compact for a receiver, about the size of a single-disc CD player, but by my scale it weighs 22 lbs. That's REALLY heavy for such a small size! It's not just the metal case, it has to have a large, heavy power transformer insode, a good indication of high power output. Googling shows the 300 has 25 "conservative" watts per channel and the 350 at 50WPC.

These aren't good pics, I didn't have enough light offhand for this cheap hand-held flipcam. Maybe I'll take better pics later. Here's the whole thing:

Nice find, even if only for parts. Yes, the linear power section does have a heavy transformer. Expect up to 100W/ch into 4 ohms. Finding a tuner dial is going to be nearly impossible. If you need a copy of the rudimentary owner's manual, let me know. Likewise, if you want to sell it (so I have spare parts), let me know as well.

Yes, this was made right around the time Advent was purchased. There is next to nothing out there about this. I have one and couldn't find a schematic anywhere. I've got the manual and original box too. It's very heavy and sounds great. What I know about the receiver is from some paperwork that came with my receiver. It seems Stereo Cost Cutters, the same folks who bought up Dynaco parts when Dynaco went under, bought up remaining inventory and liquidated it. I think it is a better receiver than the Advent 300.

Advent 350 receiver

Owned an Advent 350 receiver for about 3 weeks. Even though collecting vintage Hi-Fi for a few years, never know Advent had made receivers. Advent 350 is very nice receiver, now it replaced Marantz 2285 to drive my Altec VOTT. It is a solid heavy receiver for its size, easy to use and has good FM tuner. Quite different from main stream vintage receiver.

Hi, cameranuts. Sounds like you're into some cool audio gear. You should post more often! :yes:

I well remember the Advent 350.

Bought a 300 early in 1980 and not long afterward the same dealer had a 350 on display. It was so cool looking and performed every bit as well, but with much more power. I was tempted to trade the 300 in for one but had already purchased a Hafler DH 200 which I fed from the 300's preamp outs to satisfy my power needs.

Still enjoying the Advent 300 (and Hafler) to this day. Yet I find myself thinking back to that 350 occasionally and wondering "what if ..."

I too will be using a VOTT, but am adding a separate amplifier (fed from the tape-level pre-amps to drive it). I intend to use it in mono mode, as I only have one VOTT. Kind of a center-channel speaker. I will also run my 2 pairs of conventional "bookshelf type" speakers in stereo. That way, I get to keep the excellent tuner of the Advent 350, and should get wonderful dynamic range. The only issue I am currently having is keeping the controls of the Advent 350 clean. I need to de-ox them yet again. In particular, I am getting dropout on the left volume potentiometer.

Advent 350 receiver

I have an Advent 350 receiver. Very nice receiver with very sensitive FM tuner. Nice detail sound and so far I use it with Altec VOTT. I would like to share 3 pictures of this receiver.

Very nice receiver. Mine had many bad solder connections and dirty controls. It's a rare piece, made right around the time that Jensen bought Advent. Shortly thereafter, Advent got out of the component business.

Yep... Great receiver. Very sensitive and accurate tuner. Mine has had to have the controls cleaned, and it needs it again. Good thing we have DeOxIt available! But it's well worth it, as the vinyl sound and the tuner accuracy are great. One day I may have to get everything re-capped, as there is some 60-Hz hum at low volumes.

Late to the 350 party. I was living in Boston at the time and bought a lightly used 350 from a local dealer, but found it didn't sound substantially (any?) better than my then-highly-modded Advent 300, so I eventually returned it. Still regret that decision! It was such a solid piece of audio engineering and ergonomics.

At least I still have my 300, doing duty in the bedroom system, still sounding fine (though nowhere near my current big rig), never having missed a beat in 34 years.

I have two different 'preliminary' marketing brochures for the 350, written in the same matter-of-fact manner of other Advent copy of the day. It's clear all of its DNA came from the success of the 300.

The impetus for the 350 was as much to correct the 300's weaknesses:
1) marginal output power bumped up substantially;
2) FM drift cos they put some key passive tuner components right up against the power amp heat sink was cured with all-new layouts;
3) hard to read FM dial, much larger and nearly 360 degrees vs tiny 180 degree span of 300;
4) a tone defeat as the 300 tone controls couldn't be bypassed and clouded the preamp sound a little;
5) I assume some better components, a revisit of all the circuits, and a much cleaner layout rather than the random rat's nest of wires inside the 300, regardless of how brilliantly it worked. I've always wanted to take the schematic and lay it out properly with quality modern parts to see what such a fresh design was capable of.

If Jstaley (one of the designers who posted here) is still around, he may have more design briefs of the 350 to refine the 300...

Would love to see scans of those... any chance you can do that and post them as pdf's here?

John

Advent 350 brochures

Here ya go. The first one is from '79 and is 'preliminary'. The second one has specs and is dated 8/80.
