Advent 4002

I was just given a pair of clean looking Advent 4002 speakers. The previous owner said both tweeters were blown. He bought two new tweeters for them, which are still new in the box. When he pulled the grills off he found that the foam surrounds are also rotted.

I don't think the tweeters are blown, the tweeter fuses and the fuse holder caps are missing on both speakers.
The tweeters are the black poly dome type tweeters not the older red style Advent tweeters.

The woofers are 10" in a 12" frame much like the older Advent speakers.

My question is are these worth fixing up? I'm looking at refoaming both woofers and replacing both fuse holders.

Also, what size fuse should these have?

I acquired a pair a few months ago that had been refoamed and they sound pretty darn nice IMHO. Not sure about the fuse question but if the tweeters are intact you've got a nice, rich sounding set of sepakers for what it costs to fix the fuse issue and refoam, along with an extra set of tweets. Certainly worth fixing.

yes! Yes! Yes!

I ordered a set of surrounds last night, should have them by the end of the week or so.
The fuse holders are both broken, the ends of each holder is broken off and it most likely let the cap and fuse fly off. The last owner probably never noticed them missing.
Both tweeters will play music, I powered each one up with a low level feed just to see if they both made sound, my guess is that the missing fuses is the only issue.
I also ordered some new fuse holders.

I did some searching online and found a few threads here and there about the older Large Advents taking a 1 8/10A fuse but these are different tweeters, I'm thinking maybe 1 amp fuses?
Then there's the choice of whether to go with slow blow, regular, or fast blow fuses?

Does anyone have any idea what sort of power these 4002 speakers were meant to handle? There doesn't seem to be much info on the web about these at all.

I can't help with the fuses other than to suggest the obvious that smaller and fast-blow would be more protective. They should be dirt cheap so buy some spares and see how it goes.

You might as well look into recapping while you are at it. A few more $ to bring them up to spec can't hurt.

I owned a pair 5002s. To my ear they are the best sounding Advent I've heard. So, if the 4002s sound similar to the 5002s fix them and enjoy.

I was pretty much going to just test the caps first, then if I found one bad, replace them all.

Any advice on what brand or where to buy new caps?

Based on my assumptions of age (>20 years?) and type (electrolytic?) they are due for replacement.

The 5% Dayton polys (Parts Express) are a good value. I don't think I can hear the difference between a $2 cap and a $20 boutique cap....but some folks can.

How long is the life span of an electrolytic capacitor?
D they go bad even if not used?
I've got boxes of parts that came from a local manufacturer that closed up in the early 90's. There's probably 30 lbs of misc. electrolytic capacitors in boxes.
The place built power supplies and timer circuits for the swimming pool business, I think I bought the whole lot, which was roughly a pickup truck full of parts in all for $10 at auction in the mid 90's. I sold off most of the IC chips years ago, kept the rest. I mainly bought the lot for the hardware assortments that came with it. Most parts are in 250 count boxes, with the majority of items being small resistors and ceramic capacitors.

I removed all four caps from the 4002 Crossovers and tested them, all four measure dead on what they're marked, (32uf-50v & 7.5uf-50v). I'm not sure I see the need to replace caps that test good? I used both my BK 801 and a Fluke tester both show these as being perfect, 25 years old or not.

I'm interested in the opinions of the more knowledgeable, but from my perspective, as with most things, I'd think if ain't broke, don't fix it.

I'm leaning the same way, if it ain't broke, why mess with it.
I do have to change out the fuse holders, but I have those as well.
Also, if I change the caps, especially if I put in something better than what was there from the factory, will it change the sound? I also don't see a direct replacement for these values, all I have and all I can find listed are 6.8uf and 8uf for the smaller cap, and 30 or 33uf for the larger cap. Sure I can make up the values by using several caps in each position, and using a cap that's close enough probably won't affect the sound enough to matter but why do it or take the chance if what's here all tests out fine.
My guess is that the last owner sold these because he thought the tweeters were blown, thus the new spare set of tweeters I got with them. He most likely never knew the fuse holders were missing both the fuse and fuse retainer.

I got the foam surrounds the other day, the woofers are all ready to install once I swap out the fuse holders on each speaker.
