I have a pair of Advent 5002 speakers with pretty rough cabinets, but the drivers seem ok. Obviously the woofers will need to be refoamed. My question is: are they worth fixing? I've read some very good reviews here on AK, with some folks saying they are the best of the large Advents, with little argument. Trust me, I am not trying to start another Advent debate. I would just like some impressions from people that actually own a pair or have listened to them.
Also, is there any harm in connecting these to a receiver to test the tweeters? I hesitate to do so knowing that the woofer foam is gone. I plan on ordering the foam kit from Mr. Cobb (Rick?) if I decide to make the repair.
I think a full restoration is out of the question, but I could use them in the garage where cosmetic appearance wouldn't be important.

I have the 4002's and they are pretty nice speakers. If you want to test the tweeters I'd lay the speakers flat on their backs and play them quietly for just long enough to hear the tweeters.

And yes, refoaming a pair of Advents is pretty straightforward. Many AKers have experience in this area and would be glad to help!

After 40 minutes of cleaning up the cabinets, they look more presentable, but the grills still look bad. There aren't any on the auction site at the moment, and replacing the cloth is nearly impossible, since the two-piece frame is glued together.
I did connect my Optimus STA-300 receiver to test the drivers, and they're all firing.
To sum up after further inspection:
POSITIVES:
- All drivers are working and original
- Both badges are present as well as the binding post screws
- The cabinets cleaned up better than I originally thought
- A refoam is not terribly difficult or expensive (I've done a pair of NLA's before)
- The consensus opinion of the 5002 is overwhelmingly positive
NEGATIVES:
- The bottom left edge of one of the cabinets has swelled (from water, no doubt) but it appears that the seal integrity of the cabinet is still intact
- The grills are unacceptable in this state of disrepair, and replacement of the grill cloth is nearly impossible
- Used replacement grills would likely be over $60 shipped - more than I'd like to spend
I'm sure others will chime in with suggestions.
 
I found a pair of these and the fried egg large advents with the vinyl. The 5002 has the better tweeter and these really do have a great sound, but they are just so THIRSTY for power. with a 300 watt crown, I was able to get them where I wanted them sometimes. Worth the repair.
 
I have curb score NLA that PO replaced the tweets with 5002 domes. They are bullnose walnut so 5012’s. I reformed & recapped em to match the 5002 XO.
They have better bass @ do jazz better than my ADS L1290’s. They just have a very good sound stage & as a 2-way, they seemingly have more of the “smiley face” EQ curve I prefer.

They are classics and well known but don’t get the appreciation they deserve IMO. Worth restoring.
 
There are many talks on this site as well as classicspeakerpages.net on suitable cloth for these(not perfect but close)
