Advent 5002 vs Genesis Genre II

Hello, new here. I'm the first to admit I am not a high-end audio aficionado, but I enjoy good sound.

I have a pair of refoamed Genesis Genre IIs in excellent condition. Human Speakers in NH did the refoaming and found they didn't need any other work.

A person local to me just posted a listing for Advent 5002s in what they say is also excellent condition, for $300. I don't remember the exact cost of the Genre IIs, but with the refoaming, they were probably $30-80 less.

Would moving to the Advents be an upgrade in terms of audio quality? I've read enough to understand they are great speakers, but of course older. I'm not sure I will get a chance to listen to them, but I will check to see if they need refoaming or other maintenance.

The 5002s are my favorite Advent speaker. Basically a OLA with a dome tweeter instead of the occasionally grating fried egg.

That said, that price seems high to me.
 
Move up not over.

For my hard earned $.02 I’ve found I prefer the sound of Dahlquist speakers. Not the the Advents are bad but more just different. For the asking you can do better.

If the asking price were different, would you recommend the Advents - are they better than the Genesis? (in terms of sound quality rather than cost)

And, what's a fair price for the Advents? I did google a bit and found one pair listed at $295. Another sold on eBay for $165 but I assume shipping wasn't cheap.
 
I would have a hard time saying better. I would say different. One is a small Tower the other is a bookshelf speaker. One has a dome the other has a ribbon. One has almost twice the size woofer of the other. They both do very different things to reach a surprisingly similar conclusion. I would go 180 for a nice pair of 5002 if I didn't already have a pair of speakers I like. It depends on where you're at in your journey. I try to buy things low enough so that I can play with them for a while and not lose money moving them along if I decide they don't make the cut. 300 definitely will not do that.
 
Oh, and speaker values depend a lot on where you are at. They are expensive to ship as you noted so they tend to sell local. I'm in Pittsburgh which is a little market. If you are in San Francisco than maybe 300 isn't too much (for example).
 
Thanks, that's very helpful. I guess what that says to me is the Advents aren't remarkably better then the Genesis. (genesises?) I'm in the Burlington area of Vermont - very small market, on the other hand sometimes that means you have to pay more because there's less for sale... I wasn't actively looking, though, so I will let these ones go unless I see the asking price lowered.
 
I have a pair of Advent 5012, which are basically the 5002's but in a super awesome walnut veneer with traditional Advent bullnose solid wood front. The 5012's are the best vintage Advent that I've owned, and I've had them all (I no longer have the Large Advent or New Large Advent). The dome tweeter on the 5002 and 5012 is what brings the Large Advent into the modern era and makes this speaker still relevant today. The woofer is not too different and still punches super deep just like the older Advents. Its a great speaker that you won't be disappointed by. The only other vintage Advent I still own are my Smaller Advents, which are truly remarkable speakers.

As an aside, the second pair of speakers I ever bought with my own hard earned $$ back in the day were Advent Legacy's. These were and still are awesome speakers both visually (pecan wood tops and base) and sonically. First pair were Boston Acoustics A40's.

As for 5002 price, if they are in mint condition with not many scratches on the vinyl, etc., with refoamed woofers (and even better if the caps have been replaced) I wouldn't pay more than ~$150.
 
Thanks again for the thoughts! I decided to decline - there wasn't a clear advantage in making the change and too many potential downsides. I also didn't get an answer about whether the speakers needed refoaming. Hopefully the seller will find the right buyer and price.
 
To the OP, does that mean you are running Genesis "Genre II ?" Speakers? If you are running Genesis Physics II speakers, then you will have a hard time finding better. These are very good speakers. I have a pair running right now that I just brought back to life.
 
Too funny! I figured you had mixed up genre with physics and these were the same. I see they are very different beasts. The good thing is that Arnie Nudell was the president of the company. He founded Infinity in the late 60s. Good pedigree!
