Advent 5012's vs. Other vintage 2 ways

Analogue "AAA" vinyl.
Have heard Large Advents and really liked them. Read the 5012's came later and have different tweeters and XO'ers, but otherwise similiar construction. How do the 5012's compare to other similiar design speakers with an "Everyman" price point?

Some folks will tell you the 5012s are the best of the Large Advents, I tend to agree. If they can be picked up at a decent price, they are hard to beat.

I tend to agree as well. I have the 5002's (the vinyl clad version of the 50012) and I think they are the best Advents I've heard along with The Smaller Advent.

I'd have a hard time choosing between the 5002 / 50012 and the KLH Twenty-Three, but in the long run I think I'd probably take the walnut 50012 over the Twenty-Three. I like the high frequency response of the Advent a little more than the Twenty-Three, but both have excellent bass response.

Thanks for the replies. Looks like i'll be pulling the trigger for these. The Valencias were just too damn expensive and much more speaker than i needed for the livingroom system. The Cornie 2's are staying put in ye olde "Man Cave."
 
I have a pair of 5002s and they are nice speakers. This coming from one who is not a fan of the OLA.

These are the rarer Oak veneer versions too! I've bought replacement woofs from the seller before and we're friendly, so looks like i'll have them in the house PDQ.

I wonder if the 5002s would be Ewave candidates? I'd like to get some use out of mine.

They sounded great during the audition but at home with more critical listening (and proped up), the BASS just seems "off" or "buzzy" or "loose." Maybe a refoam will help, but the seller said both were recently refoamed. Maybe the 2-way Advent sound just isn't for me and/or i've been spoiled by Klipsch!? Not exactly what i'd hoped for. They certainly look nice and reckon they'd have a high WAF.....but i don't have to worry about that anymore! :D

Thoughts? Advice?

I currently have the 23s and love them, especially when driven by my NAD 2200. I had the "New Large Advents", bought on President's Day 1979 in Shirlington, VA (at a "Circuit City", then a small chain in VA, I believe). I think they were the 5012s because I don't remember an orange tweeter and I loved them for about 10 years. I did ruin the tops by putting plants on them and really want to get a pair with flawless wood. My elementary aged kids know not to put anything on Dad's speakers! I replaced them with CSW Ensembles, of all things and sold them to a friend. I might just pick up a pair to try them against the 23s when my wife and kids depart for a 6 week vacation to Asia next week but they'll have to be gone before they get back, LOL.

I just picked up a pr. of Advent 5012-O's for short money, Love how they sound. Running them off a Rotel A12 intergrated amp and a B&O 1900 turntable. Had the originals back in 1979 and wished I never got rid of.

My 5012’s sound better overall than my OLA. The tweeter in the 5012 is simply better IMO. Bass is similar. The KLH 23 is a different beast altogether. There is no contest. The bass in the KLH is much better than any of the advents. I think the 5012 has better highs than the KLH 23. But I’ll listen to that buttery KLH sound and absolutely incredible bass of the 23 over the 5012 every time.
 
I truly like the sound of the "002" series Advents. I currently own the 3002, 4002, 5002 & 5012W's. To me, the best sounding Advent is the 5012!!! You can't go wrong with Advents. They are hands down good sounding speakers!!! Are there better? Sure.
To me, Advents are speakers you take your time patiently waiting until some other better sounding speaker(s) come around!!!
Inotherwords, I'm not in any hurry looking for other hifi speakers.
