I think I have the large advent speakers but I'm not sure and I want to get the correct foam surrounds for these. on the back it just says "the advent loudspeaker. it has the steel frame that the woofer mounts onto, not the masonite deal. Here is a pic of what mine look like

Those are the New Large Advents. The ones with the masonite are the Old Large Advents. Your picture is small so it's a little tough to see.

I second the advice to go with Rick Cobb. Got his surround kit for my New Large Advents and was very pleased with the results.

I'm glad to see that more and more of us are getting the word out about getting the correct surrounds for these and other AS speakers.

Not that long ago there was a tendency to just use any surround that would physically fit without any consideration as to thickness (compliance) or roll size and I'm afraid there were many pairs of Advents with compromised performance, especially in the lower octaves, because of it.

In fact, I had to redo some of the ones I bought that had been refoamed because the PO had used incorrect surrounds.

This is also why, if I were to buy any more, I would rather buy ones that need refoaming and have been left alone rather than ones claiming a fresh refoam.

Has anyone verified the long term/break-in effects of this??
I know Bauhausler has measured some and found the generics to be stiffer and less compliant, but I can't help but believe that after a period of time they would loosen up and become more supple.

I'd like to see if anybody has measured them after a few weeks of regular, moderate playing and see how they compare then.

If the surrounds are made of a less compliant and thicker material, they will never be as good as the thinner, more compliant versions regardless of how long they are broken in.

I haven't tested or compared the two foams, so I can't say what the differences are, but I would still like to see some testing to back up this position.

I understand your point, but it's still quite possible that they may loosen up to perform as well as the others.

+1 with going to Rick...Also those foam surrounds go on the opposite way of the Original Advent. The "hump" of the surround goes up facing you....the older original version went down like a valley.

It took them about about 5 days to get moving properly in my experience.
