Advent Heritage - need opinions/advice

I just got a nice pair of Advent Heritage for $50. The woofers need to be refoamed which I just finished. Sound goods now. Can anybody let me know or share your opinions about this speaker. Should I keep it as already have a pair Bose 601 series III? Thanks

Not an exceptional speaker, but a decent one. The biggest downfall is midrange performance, off axis especially. But that's one of the problems with the 601 as well, not so much the off axis, but the midrange.

The Advents will have an overall better presentation than the Bose, better high frequency response, but the Bose may have a bit of an edge in the bottom end. The Advent cabinet is in great need of some internal bracing, which should close up any bottom end deficit.

The upsides are that it is a very pleasant speaker, like all Advents, and is very good looking. It looks like a much more expensive speaker than what it was with the grilles on.

Hopeless,

Thanks for the info. What did you mean "The Advent cabinet is in great need of some internal bracing..."? Can you show me how to do that? Thanks

Advent Heritage tweaks and bracing

Bracing would be internal wooden struts which span the e inside of the speaker box in all axis and hold the sides tightly [apart/solid]. You can retrofit them with say 2x4 cuts that JUST fit when you tap them in, snugly...then glue them with construction adhesive, on the back you can also fire in screws.

Sound? They are somewhat muddy in the midrange, you can help matters by swapping out the tweeter with a planar-magnetic one like say a RT1.3 on it's side, wired backwards. But what *I* have dreamed of doing is adding 2 x Bohlender Greabener Neo8PDRs in series on a baffle mounted to side on piano-hinge. So 4 of those total. COuld just seal UP the tweeter opening and put a Neo8, Neo3 [with back cup removed]-Neo8 MTM style and have a bipolar MTM baffle on piano-hinge. THEN the 2 woofers per side could be wire in parallel and fed from 0-800Hz or 6db point at 600 and cross in the Neo8 pair at 800 and Neo3 at say 10Khz [Neo8 has a performance peak up around 10K you want to avoid]
