Please help ID these Advents. I've looked through all the Advent ID posts here, but these as listed as 35" X 13", which is larger than any I've come across here. Look a bit rough, seller is asking for $30, says they "work". Thanks for any assistance...

They look like Advent 5002's or New Large Advents. I'd guess they're 25" x 13", not 35". It would be nice to have a photo of the rear and without the grilles on. They would be very easy to identify by seeing the drivers. Also, you'd be able to tell if they are original drivers or if they need to be refoamed.
If they are original Advent drivers, they are worth $30 even if they need to be refoamed.

Thanks. He also has a pair of Boston A150's at the same price, and will throw in some unidentified Kenwood 3-ways for $75 total. I'm not as familiar with Boston, but after a quick search here sounds like they may be worth the price, as well.
 
At $30 per pair, you should go spend $60 now. Assuming you need speakers, anyway.

Seller dropped the price to $25 ea, just after I emailed him asking for details (he says the Advents are 26", not 35", high). He then jacked the price back up to $30 after he got my email. I've just sent another email offering $45 total for the Advents and A150's, noting that he had dropped the price online. My wife will kill me if I score these, but such is life ;)

If I were you, I'd email him your phone number and have him call you. Others may be emailing him, too, and offering a few dollars more if you don't watch it. Gotta get on them fast.
 
You want those and the BA 150's for $60.

I didn't see a good image of "The New Advent Loudspeaker" in the link provided. I had a gorgeous pair with bull-nose cabinets in my daughters bedroom for about 10 years.

There is no such thing as a "New Large Advent Loudspeaker". There is no such thing as "The Large Advent Loudspeaker".

Reality intrudes

OK, "She Who Must Be Obeyed" has declared that there will be a maximum of one (1) pair of speakers in need of refurbishment in the household at any one time.

So, I've searched these august forums, and it looks like the A-150's have a slight edge over the New Advents. They are also almost exactly the same size as the speakers on the wife's crapola department store Sony faux-rack system, and have the same Oak veneer (real vs. vinyl on the Sony's). They also appear to be in better cosmetic condition. WAF is a big consideration here, unfortunately.

The seller says the A-150's have rips around the woofer surrounds, but he's unable to remove the Advent grilles (aren't they just velcro'd on?).

I'm scheduled to pick these up this afternoon, just have to make the decision on which pair...

These will be used in a large room, approx 14' X 24', driven by a mid '80's Realistic receiver with 75Wpc.

Assuming both need to be re-foamed, which is the better choice?

Ignore your wife, buy both. refoam both, listen to both, keep what you like and flip the other. Some howards restore-a-finish and feed-n-wax will make those advents nice looking. High WAF IMO. maybe more so than the bostons.

Let your ears decide. :yes:
 
Do you have an attic you can store speakers of average size in until you can get to redoing them? If so, that would help. How about a single friend that has a spare garage? :D There's gotta be a way!

Going today to pick up a pair of Advent Classics (25th Anniversary) myself that need new foam. :)

Update... Picked them up and they are sitting on the kitchen table for the moment. I've got to get some foam ordered for them tomorrow and just do some basic cabinet maintenance. They are in good shape overall with the exception that they need new grill cloth. I need to research in here and see where that "almost original" stuff comes from. Funny that my New Large Advent grills are in night and day better shape versus these that are what...about 10+ years newer? Once done, I just might stack 'em. For poops and grins, of course.
 
Alright, I went with the Advents. The A-150's and the Advents both needed new foam, but the A-150's had water damage on top that I imagined would be really difficult to repair (otherwise looked great), vs the scuffs and paint on the Advents that should be easier.

I'm no expert, but these do appear to be the New Advents. I cautiously applied low volume, tweets sound good, woofers actually sound surprisingly good considering.

Avguytx, let me know where you are ordering your foam from, thanks.

The seller just upped the price for the A-150's to $40 :)

Being that you're apparently in CA, you might get yours from Orange County Speakers (www.speakerrepair.com) where you can get the complete kit including glue, shims, etc. If you already have some of the stuff to do them, then you might find some of the guys in here that sell foam surrounds. I get mine from a buddy that owns a place.

Yep....those are the NLA's (the A4 in the serial number). I'm sitting here listening to mine at the moment, too. The others are on the kitchen table and I thought about swapping the woofers around so I could hear them but decided not to. I'll just wait till I get the foam done, cabinets sanded down, grills done, etc. I might end up giving these to my buddy back home since he has a pair of 5002's and they would match pretty well. He could even stack them! ha.

Wow, that sure makes a difference. I had to sand the tops first with some 220 grit to get rid of the paint rings, but they look fantastic now. Any hints on fixing the two dented back corners?

Unfortunately, they're closed thru Jan 4th. Their kit costs about $40 with shipping and tax. I found a guy locally who does these professionally (out of his garage) for $60, and can have them back by Wednesday, so what the hey, I'll try doing it myself on the next pair :)
