Advent Legacy I

I have a set of Advent Legacies the I just picked up. Of course it needed new foams and that is in process.

I'm a fan of the Jensen era Advents. I think they are good speakers and with just a little bit of tweeking become a much better speaker.

I've done a bunch of work on the Heritage, Laureates, Prodigies, and Babies. Typically, upgrading the caps to Metalized Polypropylene, adding additional polyfill, and upgrading the inductors yeild significant improvements. My approach has been to maintain the original design, and stick with the standard resistor values, capacitance, and inductor values - and I've been very pleased with the results.

This is my first Legacy and its different from the other Advents. These speakers were extrememly well loaded with sound insulation. There is more stuffing that I've ever seen before (observation not a complaint). My concern centers are the crossover. I've attached a drawing of the crossover, I make drawings for all the speakers I work. I'm extremely surprised that there is not crossover for the 10 inch woofer. The woofer gets the full range signal, and relies on the physical limitation of the speaker and its inability to produce high frequency. Part of me feels that there should be an inductor in series to limit the high frequency, yet I'm also torn towards leaving the original engineering.

Is anyone aware of a crossover mod for these? Advent uses this same woofer in the Maestros, but the crossover point would be different since the Maestros have a midrange.

I owned a pair of these years ago.

The 10" woofer does not need a crossover. It relies on the inductance of the voice coil to roll the highs off and the soft cone to have little to no break up. It works, although the bigger limitation would be dispersion of a large woofer near the crossover frequency more than anything else.

I'm going to leave the woofer circuit as is and just upgrade the tweeter circuit with film caps.

At a later date I might revisit it. It such a simple circuit that I could add a serial inductor and a bypass switch to see it there is any difference.

I would like to get my hands on a Legacy III. The had a dual voice coils and a switch to select 8 or 6 ohm. I've also been told they are other differences in the crossove including a switch from air core to iron core. I'd really like to see a schematic.
 
Update...
I was cruising ebay and got a look at the Maestro crossover. It also looks to be a direct connect to the woofer. There is only one inductor that I can see and logically that must be for the band pass circuit supporting the mid range although I can't say that with certainty.

I shall leave the woofer circuit as designed.

I just finished the refoaming, the speakers sould great. I'm waiting for the Poly caps I ordered from Parts Express. I also picked up a set of Heritage crossovers. They are the perfect size for the Legacy terminal cutout but they add 5 way binding posts. I'll build the updated crossover on the Hertitage terminal blocks.
 
Letting the woofer roll off saves a ton of crossover $. Big inductors cost money. My issue with Advent's is the corner cutting wasn't necessary. The fabric dome tweets were very pleasant, the woofers, crossovers, and cabinets could have each been upgraded a notch and the final product would have been far more satisfying to a much broader audience. However, they came to market as receiver quality was imploding and built to that lower denominator. It paid off for years.
