I didn't find any scrapping when I push around the center cap but there is scrapping on the left side of the out edge of the speaker but not the right side. No such misbehaviour on the other speaker. I guess it was not properly centered when the surrounds were replaced. Is the only solution to try and replace the surround again?

Unfortunately, yes. You're lucky, that's a relatively inexpensive fix. I'd recommend an Xacto knife with a new blade to cut the surround from the cone. A damp paper towel may dilute the glue enough to remove, or you may need to use some solvent (which in theory shouldn't harm a paper cone, but it may stain it, so test it on a hidden spot first), depending on what sort of glue was used.
Remember that when replacing the surround, you'll want to center it using a tone (many people recommend 30hz). Don't try to do it by feel (which is probably what the previous owner did).

By tone, I presume you mean reconnecting the speaker and listening for clarity at 30hz as it is re-glued and re-aligned, with some support underneath to keep it from rubbing.? Or alternatively removing the cap and using shims?

Glue the surround to the cone and let dry. It may help to stuff paper towels between the bottom of the cone and the frame to raise the cone so the surround is clear of the frame. Remove the paper towels after the glue dries and the surround is secured to the cone.
Connect an amplifier to the driver, either directly or through the crossover - doesn't matter. Apply glue to the outer edge of the surround and/or basket flange. Play the tone to magnetically center the voice coil in the gap. I have a phone app that generates tones. Play the tone loud enough where you can see the cone vibrate, but not so loud that the surround bounces around. With the tone playing, secure the outer portion of the surround to the basket. You should not hear any noise coming from the driver except maybe a low hum depending upon the actual frequency.
I turn off the tone after the surround is secured. I then press the cone to ensure that there is no rubbing. I suggest you play with pressing the cone in various spots to get a feel for how the VC interacts with the gap. Advent woofers have a wide gap and are easy to align.
