Advent Legacy Restomod

I recently snagged a pair of Advent Legacy speakers, and true to my nature, I wanted to give them a good refresh. The foams were solid, thankfully, so I didn't have to fuss with that.

In a nutshell:
  • Refinished pecan tops and bottoms
  • Rebuilt crossovers
  • Added 5-way binding posts
  • Added bracing and resonance-dampening material to the inside of the cabinets
  • Extra fill
I still need to get a gold marker / some gold paint to touch up the Advent badges before replacing them, but here's the gist of it in visual form.

The rebuilt crossover images were pre-soldering and tidying, so don't judge too harshly. :) Nor judge too hard on the SIZE of that 30uf cap. The images start with the original crossover, then it cleaned up, then the new crossover builds, then the cabinets, then the refinished pecan.

Did I drill right through the original binding springs to create the holes for the binding posts? Yes, yes I did. Did it end up looking a little goofy? Yes, yes it did.

I ended up only re-using the original inductor from the original crossover. In the previous post, you'll notice I had to combine non-inductive resistors from two different manufacturers to get to 1.3ohms.

I wasn't worried about the reflectivity in the higher frequencies from the rubber - the fiberglass fill and cabinet will kill that.

How do they sound? Very Advent. Plenty of bass - a little tighter post-mod - smooth but perhaps slightly subdued mids, comfortable highs. I'm still working on the placement.
