Advent Legacy Speakers

Hey, I just picked up a pair of new-in-box Advent Legacy Speakers. They are huge and heavy, housed in bullnose light brown wood casing. They do say "Jensen" on the back. The guy who had them appeared to be a hoarder, the speakers had never been touched let alone used. They must be about 36 inches tall. I got them for $160 for the pair. A good deal? I did hook them up and don't love the sound, the tweeter seems not so great, although the bass is very good. I might use a four-speaker system, I also picked up a while back some smallish black Altec Lansing speakers at a Goodwill for $20, they seem to produce a better sound than the Advents. Thoughts?

How is the foam? Those are notorious for foam rot.

Otherwise, heck if you don't like them, move on. Life's too short! I owned a similar pair of Advent Prodigy Towers and wasn't impressed either (and then a pair of Legacy that were much more impressive); they do seem to have a following.

Perhaps you should consider a capacitor replacement. When capacitors age the dielectric fluid in the capacitor dries and the function that they serve as a frequency-specific energy filter for the tweeter deteriorates. Lets ask others here - but I think that the issue is age specific and not use specific. So your speakers being new-old-stock does not avoid capacitor deterioration. When a capacitor ages it passes energy spectra to the tweeter that it was not designed to handle; so it sounds shitty (this is a technical term).

Replace the capacitor ... a few bucks each speaker .... before you do anything radical (like sell them to me).
 
Even though NOS, they are still closing in on being 30 years old. Foam will still rot & capacitors will still go out of spec regardless of use. Are the woofer surrounds still pliable? Some break in time will help, but they still won't sound like a new pair.
 
Nib maybe its an OK deal
I have legacy lll and while they're OK I also felt the tweeter was a bit dull
Woofer was good
Maybe a solid B grade consumer speaker
Hadn't recapped em yet and now they're in storage
