Advent Loudspeaker and Smaller Advent Loudspeaker 8ohm vs 4ohm

Hi,

I have a an original pair of "The Advent Loudspeaker" built at 8ohm. (1971) They sound incredible.

I just picked up a pair of "the Smaller Advent Loudspeaker" (1972) and they are rated at 4 ohms. I read somewhere that they have the same crossovers just in a smaller package. Is this true? Does anyone know why Henry Kloss built them at 4 ohm instead of 8ohm? What were the benefits?

I wanted to stack the smaller one on top of the larger advents and run them at the same time but I am afraid my Kenwood Model 11 II amp might blow them up.

Thoughts?

The drivers are different as is the crossover. Henry wanted to build a system with the same bass extension and performance as the larger system in a smaller box at a lower cost. To perform this trick he had to trade off some efficiancy and ultimate volume capability. He made the smaller 4 ohms to overcome some of this lower efficiancy. Solid state receiver of the day would put out a little more power into the 4 ohm load. I would be more worried about the Advents blowing up your Kenwood.

So, can you educate me (interested in this thread) here a bit? What exactly leads to efficiency or lack thereof? Are you referring to the size of cabinets, the driver diameter, do certain crossovers behave differently or have needs, or is 4 ohm versus 8 ohm inherently more efficient? I have often wondered why my Infinity Quantum 3's (not small or inexpensive) are 4 ohm, as are many Cerwin Vegas, etc.?

What leads the designer to choose 4 ohm vs. 8 ohm? Is there a logic that a layman might understand in this art?

pretty much everything leads to efficiency or the lack thereoff.

the cabinet size, and the driver mass & magnet & material used for surrounds & spider...
the heavier the cone, the lower the efficiency, when you've got a stiff surround, and a stiff spider, the efficiency will also drop, it's not that you can't have heavy drivers with a high efficiency though, if you've got a big, massive magnet, the efficiency will also raise.
then, other aspects.
the cabinet ( as said before) size matters. a big cabinet will provide more efficiency, and then, other stuff, a horn will also increase the efficiency drastically
