Advent or Polk with Marantz?

I am keeping an eye out for either some Polk Monitor 7s (with the Peerless tweeter) or some Advent 5002 / 5012s to go along with my Marantz 1060 (30 watts per channel).

I am curious to get feedback from anyone as to which might sound better with the 1060.

(I listen to pretty much all genres, with heavy emphasis on Jazz and Rock.)

I've driven my re-capped 7B's with a Marantz 2270 and it sounded very nice indeed. :yes:
 
You'll probably find the Advents before you find Polk 7's with the peerless tweeter. I have both models (Advents with dome tweeter) and Polk is a much more refined speaker, especially for jazz... The Advents are also less efficient so you will get easier volume out of your 30 watt marantz. I drive my Polk's with a Sansui AU 717 and it is an excellent combo. The Advents will do better with more watts, so get the Polk's if you can or get the Advents and keep watching for the Polks. Also, you'll need to get stands for the monitor 7's as they were designed to have stands.

crazy im going through this same dilemma right now too. I do have both pairs of speakers that you mentioned. However I do need a new driver for the Polks do to magnet shift

Also I don't mean to hijack this thread but my advents and polks
both have their original capacitors in the crossovers. I really only want to spend money on redoing doing 1 so which do you think would be
better option, the Polks for the advents.
 
I have a pair of 7Bs & they do sound nice with my Sony TA-F4A amp. Keep looking for a pair as they do show up from time to time.

I have had both. Actually I still have the Advent 5002s and I like them a bit more. How they will sound with your amp I can't say.

I ran a Marantz 2220 with a pair of Advents for years. Good combo, but the 2220 didn't really have enough beans for the job. The 1060 is only a little better off in that regard. The combo sounded good, just don't expect room filling sound from them. At the time I was renting an apt, so I kept the volume low anyway.
 
I've personally like neutral to bright sounding speakers with Marantz, but that's me. Marantz tend to control and bring the best out of those speakers. Having said that, asking which speaker will pair better with your Marantz is like asking which mustard is best for a hot dog: Yellow or Brown?
 
Not really, I've only heard the Advent, and found it pretty neutral to a little forward, maybe a good match.
 
I don't know about the 5002 but he OLA and the 1060 is an extremely musical combination (that's what I have) but certainly not enough power to break windows or anything.

It all depends on your ears. Can you auditiion both before buying?
 
my 2230 (basically the same as your 1060 but with a tuner) sounded very good with the smaller advents I had. I didn't care for the top end as much as my AR18's, but they had an extra octave on the bottom. the 5002 with it's dome tweet should alleviate that. I currently run AR18's or some Acoustic Research Holographic Imaging M5's with my 2230, both are wonderful with the receiver. the M5's have the bass punch of the smaller advents, but much clearer and crisper mids and highs

I wish I had an opportunity to audition both. I live in Brooklyn and, I swear, it feels like every other town in this country has better access to vintage speakers- not a whole lot going on here.

michiganpat- Thanks for the feedback. I really hadn't been considering ARs because of how power-hungry I keep hearing they are. I will definitely have to look into them, though, if they are working for you.
 
I have both Polk Monitor 7Bs (with Peerless tweeters) and NLAs in the same room, connected to the same receiver (JVC-SR300, 55wpc). Although I enjoy them both, if I had to choose between the 2 I'd keep the Polks. They just seem to have a more well-balanced sound. Although, the walnut NLA cabs sure are a lot prettier than the vinyl-clad Polks.

bah, there's a board member here in australia who is tickled with his AR3's being run by a 2245, IIRC....I'd probably stick to the 10" woofer models or smaller. I'll let you know how the 2230 pushes some AR2ax if I ever get off my lazy duff and order caps and l-pads
