Advent "Prodigy Towers"

Hey guys!

Just picked up a pair of Advent Prodigy Towers today at the thrift store for $20.00. They are pretty clean, foam surrounds on the 8" mids are gone (of course lol) but they cabinets are in good shape and seem pretty well made, rather heavey for the size. They are Jensen made I believe.

The speakers are about 2-3 feet tall and about 10 inches wide, 2 way, 8 inch mid and a half inch or so tweeter. Had not tested them yet, in the process of doing so now.

So what are your opinions on these?

I still have the pair of Advent Prodigy Towers that I bought new back in 1990. Just a few months back, I refoamed the woofers and replaced the crossover caps. I'm still using them as the front speakers in my home theater setup.

Despite rotten foam nothing rubs (not gonna use them in this condition, though) and they sound pretty decent.
 
I had a pair a while back.I though they were a very decent speaker,especially for the small footprint they have.I sold them as part of a complete smaller system.
 
The more I think about it, should I even bother refoaming the midbasses or should I just get new woofers? Decisions, decisions!

Refoam is worth and cheap.
I refoamed them and they sounded very good for low volume environments.
I sold them recently as I mostly use larger speakers.

Keep in mind that they need angled surrounds, not flat.
 
I am actually in the process of restoring a pair of these right now. I like the way they sound. They don't lack bass like most people say they do. You just have to set them up right and have a good room.
 
Guess Ill refoam them. Its just to me its rather expensive and a bit time consuming and a new set of drivers would be a little more economical from a money stand point. But then again I want to keep them original. So refoam it may be.

?? refoam kit will be about $20 (I'd get the 8" Boston Acoustics "Filled Fillet" surrounds), might be able to get just the foams for about $12-15 in non kit form....

it takes 2 evenings to refoam a pair of woofers if you take your time

to find decent woofers that actually somewhat meet the specs of the originals, you're probably looking at $50=100/pr minimum....less to find the cheapest thing that will physically fit...
 
Do the refoam. :yes: It's easy, affordable, and keeps the speakers original. I've refoamed three set of Prodigy Towers and gifted them to my nieces and nephew all mated to Pioneer SX-780's. As previously mentioned, they sound very good when set up properly and they don't take up alot of space. :music:
 
Cool just make sure they have the correct attachement lip. if you can bring a woofer with you and verify good fitment before you leave P.E.
 
toss a 2lb bag of rice wrapped in a towel on them, their sound will change instantly. Mine sit on a 10" stand with a bag of rice on each one with 1/8" cork between the tower and the stand. Room placement is critical with these, but once they are set up correctly you will like them.
I currently use these with my Technics SA-DA10 and they sound fantastic.

I think using the 2lb bag of rice would give you more of a Chinese sound.
If I want more of an Italian sound, should I try a 2lb bag of pasta instead?
 
I have a pair that I bought from a friend many years ago.He wanted to sell them so he could upgrade to some Bose speakers. A short time later he asked if I would sell them back to him......and needless to say,I still have them! He was a friend,not a best friend! lol :rflmao:
I use them as my fronts on my home theatre and as my mains for music. I,ve always liked them and as stated above,placement is important. I did look at them the other day and it looks like they are ready for a re-foam also.
