Advent speaker Question

I think the woofer is also different - mine have the masonite ring and I think Gamalot's has a regular woofer with no ring, - i think.
Gamalot, do they look like this:

Even if one has the masonite ring woofer, and one the "bevelled steel" basket, they still sound the same. Same cone, same voice coil, just a different surround orientation and basket. You can substitute one for the other... they're acoustic equivalents, though the early woofer basket requires a larger mounting hole than the later model...

Gordon, do you know why they went with a 10" cone and a 12" basket with a rigged masonite ring? Surely it wasen't for any sonic advantages. Overstock of 12" baskets? Mistake in accounting? HHhmmmmmmm...........

My understanding was that the 12" basket allowed for more extension, or something like that. :scratch2: If they are sonically the same, that shoots hole sin that theory, unless the 10" baskets were designed special to make the difference...

Yea Jimmy, Mine are exact to your pic with no ring. WELL NOT EXACT, mine have foam all around :lmao:
They are really easy to refoam and mine have been a stand by speaker for all of my systems. Always sound great and just always seem to work fine while many others have needed repairs along the way.
If I found another WOOD pair like these or yours I would not hesitate for a second, working or not. Build quality, sound quality and longevity, they have it all. A TRUE Vintage speaker in every respect.

While we are on the subject Gordon, should I be looking for parts to keep these running into the next millenium?
I know the foam surrounds are easy to find but what about other parts like cones, voice coils and tweeters. Are they all available or should I think about stocking up for future rebuilds?

Gamalot, those cabinets are smaller than the original Large Advents like the ones that I have, as the woofer is also different. Gordon says the specs on the 2 different woofers is identical, but I'm curious how they can be if the cabinet dimensions are different for the 2 different boxes. If they're the same woofer then the cabinets should have the same internal volume otherwise the bass will change. If the woofers are different then that would explain the smaller cabinet volume, but would also suggest at a different sounding woofer and thus a different sound from that newer Advent than from the older Advent. Presumably, if the woofer is different and the internal volume is different then the x-over must also be a bit different. If that's the case then it looks like a completely different speaker with the same tweeter. Hmmmmmm....

Interesting Jimmy, Mine are 26" H X 14 1/8" W X 11 1/2" D.
Although I have had the woofs out for refoaming, I never looked at the XOs or gave much notice to the tweets.
They sound about the same as the old utilities I had but are just a gorgeous cabinet in comparison.
I would agree though, by changing any one of many variables, the sound would change a bit.
I do know my foam was not torn or disintegrated when I replaced it, just a bit spongy, The new foam made a big diff. in the bass response.

Here's a pic of the x-over for the large Advents:

There's not much in there: (2) 16 mfd caps, (1) 3ohm 5 watt resistor, (1) small and (1) large coil. I don't know how different they could be between the 2 different Advents. Would be nice to see the x-over in yours. I upgraded my caps and resistors when I refinished my speakers. I don't know what the Advents sounded like before (cause I've never heard a pair before), but they sound wonderful now with new foam surrounds, caps, and resistors. Right now I have them paired with my Marantz 2226 receiver and Marantz 63500 turntable - ahhhhh....sweet music from the 70's era. Totally different sound than the music my newer system reproduces. :thmbsp:

Think I would have to remove a woof and the insulation and try from the hole, Right?

I have had the Advents hooked up to almost every system I have had and they just sound good where ever they are. Can't take big power and need quite a bit to get them moving but they always sound good at reasonable levels. I have plenty of better speakers around but the Advents are deffinately worth keeping in my opinion.
What are the dimensions of your large ones?

Removed cover for the first time. Surrounds are mostly gone. Fair amount of dust on cone, majority(but not all) removed with compressed air. Made digital photos, but need software at work to remove from camera. Will post on Monday. How do I check remainder of components (both electronic and electro-mechanical) for proper function?

If that does not show you the vendors who advertise then I have no idea where you are or how you got here.

Well, I'm not Jimmy, but mine measure 25-1/2 tall x 14-3/16 wide x 11-1/2 deep. I'd say the two are nearly identical in cab volume, so Gordons claim that the woofers are the same where it counts is perfectly plausible (and he IS the resident guru). - Mark

Just did my first refoam job on a pair of prodigy 8" and found that it wasn't that hard or that scary doing them. the second one was better than the first, i also did a pair of 6" for baby advents and they also came out nice englissa

My Advents are the same size too. I guess that would make the woofer have the same sonic characteristics. But here is a picture of a "Large Advent" (newer Advent with rounded cabinet). It looks like a smaller cabinet than the originals. There is more space between the woofer and tweeter on the originals, plus the originals woofer basket diameter is 12", whereas in this picture it is 10" and the tweeter/woofer distance is smaller. What gives?

My measurements are correct. Full 26" H and a tad over 14 1/8 W.
Ha Ha, Mine are taller then yours are. LOL.
Any way, Here are some more pics and yet another question for Gordon.
BTW, on the back of the woof it says R21 1978. Which is about the time I purchased them. Had 4 utilities for Quad around 1975 and got these cause I liked them so much.
Gordon, is the foam I used correct?
