Advent Speakers: Help Identify...

Hey folks. I came across some Advents yesterday. Nothing like a great pair of speakers that my work was tossing out! They are in pretty nice shape. Some scratches on the bottom side, and a few here and there, but not major nicks. Cones are in great shape. Anyway, was wondering if someone could help me identify what model these are, and possibly tech specs as well.

Those are a great pair of New large Advents in the utility cabinets. Probably the best sounding Advents of them all. Surrounds look great, either they were replaced of they are brittle. touch them if your finger goes through them they are shot and require replacement.
 
yep, new large advents, utility cabinets. and indeed, that surround looks very good too :)
from what I'm seeing, they appear to be replaced.

have fun with them, and when you feel like you want to: you can always recap them, just don't use a bright sounding cap for them :)

Yup, that's a great one. Defended by many as being the best sounding vintage speaker ever. If you're handy at all with a soldering iron I recommend re-capping the crossovers. It does wonders for the treble clarity. IIRC, and I should, I just recapped 4 of them, they take 2 12uf caps per speaker. There were variations of the crossovers over the years, so just go with the values you find in there.

The surronds must have been re-done. I didn't take a super close look, but I can tell you that they are not brittle, and when I look at my higher res versions of the photos, they look like the surrounds must be newer.

I'll look into replacing those caps. Any other sugestions for those? Maybe so it's not too bright? Any other great mods?
 
Better terminal connections than those crappy ones they come with! haha. I replaced them on my Advents and EV's. Heck of a lot easier for swapping speakers around and you can use banana plugs, then.

Good call. I buy 5-way speaker terminals 20 pair at a time, and just about every vintage speaker that leaves here wears a pair unless it just won't fit.
Consider replacing quick disconnect terminals internally with soldered connections that won't corrode. New caps for the tweeters. Good gasket for the woofer. If you wanna go crazy, drill out the woofer screw holes and put in 'T' nuts. The wood screws are marginal, especially after being run in and out of the crumbly MDF a few times.

The early versions of that speaker used fiberglass batting for damping inside. later ones had foam, which is far easier to handle. Some people say the fiberglass gives better performance and the foam was a labor saving compromise. I've heard both and can't comment from personal experience. Just passing that along in case you feel like experimental modding.

I find low stands worthwhile for these speakers. The treble can be directional, and the proper angle and height gets better performance from them.

Having a pair of New Large Utilities, I can only confirm what others here have said..IMHO one of the best sounding vintage speakers around:yes: There are many more "flashy" and more expensive,,,but few that do so many things, so well as a good pair of Advents....IMHO of course:music: Enjoy those!!
