Advent speakers - U3?

Can anyone tell me about these speakers? I've seen a lot of posts about Advent speakers but never anything specifically about a U3. There is a huge Advent post with pictures but I still couldn't identify them. I'm guessing they must be in there somewhere.
I will be looking at a pair and was wondering what to look for. Potential issues?
I have a pair of ADS L520 and was hoping the Advents will sound at least as good. Any thoughts?

Those look to be the "utility" version of the New Large Advent. I have a pair that have U4 for the prefix of the SN. Mine needed the woofers refoamed (fairly easy chore, see surrounds sold by "looneytune2001" on the Bay) and I replaced the crossover caps. I'm not familiar with the ADS speakers, but your ears will be the final judge. I am happy with mine.

Those would be New Large Advent loudspeakers (NLA) in the utility (vinyl) cabinet. Just check the woofer surrounds and make sure they have the original tweeters. The Advents will not have the extended top end of the ADS, but will have deeper bass. I have NLA's and ADS L570's and switch between the 2 depending upon what I'm listening to. I enjoy them both!

Did the NLA have the same binding posts as the OLA? I'm thinking these are Original Large Advents. The only way to tell for sure is to take the grill off and look at the drivers.

Yes, both of my NLA's had that type of binding posts. AFAIK, they were used right through the 5012's and 25th Anniversary versions.

Likely NLA with the tell-tale rectangular tweeter cut-outs on grills. OLA models with masonite rings/fried egg tweeters have small circular cut-outs for tweeters.

The "U3" is not the model number. The "U" just indicates they are the utility (vinyl covered cabinet) version and the "3" is the first number of the serial number.

They are "The New Advent Loudspeaker(s)"

It's easy to tell between the original Advents and the New Advents mainly by looking at the woofer. Or, if you can't see the front without the grille cover off, the tweeter opening as joeinTO stated.

Or the tweeter. Both the OLA and NLA used the fried egg tweeter. In the NLA it is flush-mounted, in the OLA it is mounted on a masonite stand-off. The 5002/5012 used a newer soft-dome tweeter. Many OLA's have been updated with the newer steel-framed woofer.

Well, since there started to be a little bit o' confusion between the first two, those are the ones I am referencing.

Of course, there were later versions made also.
