Advent tweeters on KLH Seventeen

The KLH 17 is a nice speaker but it lacks the high. Previously some orgers on this forum advised replacing the KLH 17 tweeters with EPI tweeters, and claimed to get the best of 17 (the base) and the high (EPI) from both speakers.

How are the Fried Egg Style tweeters from the Large Advent Speakers?
Please comment on replacing the KLH 17 tweeters with those Fried Eggs? Can I expect the similar results with EPI tweeters?

Have you tried recaping? The KLH tweeter is actually pretty good.

I got a group of speakers once that had a KLH 23 with a Advent tweeter in it. That is not my favorite tweeter (by far) and it sounded OK. I prefer the stock tweeter though.

Advent tamed them with an engineered grille in the OLA.

I have no experience with EPI tweeters, but for KLH 17, I'm bypassing all of that and going directly to compression drivers and waveguides:

The best I've been able to determine thus far, KLH 17 woofers aren't all that, either....

An EPI tweeter is usually crossed over at 1800 hz.
I think....the tweeter on a KLH 17 speaker....is crossed over at 1500 hz.
That's dangerous territory for most 1" tweeters.
I'm not sure how low a Fried Egg speaker can be crossed over safely?
A Morel MDT20 tweeter can be crossed over at 1500 hz with a 2nd order Xover.

There's more to early East Coast tweeter design than bandwidth, also. They were attempting to integrate mid and tweeter into one driver, with maximum dispersion.

Whether they succeeded or not, with what compromises, and whether any modern cone/dome driver has ever achieved their objectives, is indeterminate. By contemporary standards, controlled directivity is a superior approach, in my view.... :yes:

I already recapped the KLH 17 per Pioneernut protocol but the high is simply not there in the 17.

if you don't like the recaped stock tweeter I doubt you'll like the Advent one in there.

I've certainly got highs.

I just ordered a different waveguide. Give me another week to EconoWave them.

I could use another pair of KLH 17 woofers for "Research."

I have a strange looking model 17 here. It has a smaller flush mount tweeter with no baffle cutout, and a little poly fill over it so you cant even see the driver. I wish I could figure how to send a pic. Thanks

The EPI tweeter worked well in the KLH 33, which is a 10" woofer in a vented enclosure (with higher efficiency and less cone mass on the woofer). Unusual for KLH- it may have been the only vented enclosure system they ever offered in the "vintage" years...

I haven't tried them in the KLH 17, personally... but considering the difference in the woofers, it may or may not be as good of a match as the 33... there's no way to know, without comparing them side by side (and I've not had any opportunity to do so)...
