Advent (Utility??) score at thrift. Not sure what to do...

Put your energies toward stuff relating to Large Advents or earlier-model Smaller Advents... it's a much more rewarding choice...

I wouldn't say they are complete crap. I've got mine double stacked in the garage, and, while the high end isn't to die for, they do everything else pretty well. I'm bettin' they'd sound pretty damn nice with a better tweeter (that's actually on my list of things to do). - Mark

Someone correct me if I'm wrong. But, I believe those are the original Advent Loudspeaker (which was available in both utility and wood veneer versions), while Mike's are the Large Advent, which was the replacement model. Is this right? - Mark

Correct. The original versions (masonite ring woofers) were built from late- '73 to around late- '76, and the models with the metal-edge woofers and the revised "fried egg" tweeters were built on from there to about 1981. After that, the "New Advent" came about, with the dome tweeter.

IMHO, either of the first two 'large' models are pretty much equivalent in performance. The Advent 1 and the "New Advent" were a bit sub-standard by comparison... and the Advent 2 was a step down even from these, as far as sonics are concerned. For completeness sake, I'd put the Smaller Advents (the originals) in a "near par" with the original Advent and Large Advents... it's a tradeoff, with slightly better mids on the Smaller, and better bass on the Large...

The Advent's I got at the thrift do have veneer cabinets.
Back to my other question, can that Advent/2 crossover be modified to use on large Advent clones?
 
I reckon they COULD be used as is. Of course, without using the particular drivers, etc., that the o/x's were designed for, it would be "pot luck" to wind up with a satisfactory end result. To really clone a Large Advent, I expect you'd need to use Large Advent drivers and a Large Advent o/x or equivalent. You might just compare the A/2 x/o's to the L/A o/x's to see what the differences are. You might find that they use some common components and that simply changing a cap value or two would net you a L/A o/x. I dunno. This is something I'll be investigating more in the near future, as I'm thinking about a project using two A/2 woofers and a single original Advent tweeter in a homebrew "tower" cab. - Mark
 
Ok - so my $40 Advent's today are the orig. Advent Loudspeaker; just like twocoasters. The owner did a nice job of refoaming the woofer and sealing up the box - even put styrofoam sheeting to seal the drivers.
Crisp clean sounding, but sorry to say; not as good as the ar-93's - lacking in low end.

Couple days ago I picked up the same speakers as Mike Bama at a local Goodwill for $6. Foam surrounds are on their way (and this will be my first re-foaming attempt)!

PM me your email addy. I should have the cabinets refinished Tuesday. You got to see em. Very nice walnut, with 3 coats of poly. Surrounds should be here from wooferrepair.com soon.
I may stack the utility Advents, with the HPM,s. The other set of HPM's, are still hooked to the surround amp downstairs. I have the AR's, and Advent Legacy II's stacked for the PC, playing thru the thrift ($10) HK 330.

4 sets of speakers in a 150 sq ft room ain't to much, is it? :jawdrop:
 
According to the employee I spoke to, the speaker pricing system at that store seems to be $6, $8 or $10, probably chosen arbitrarily by the manager or according to cosmetic condition.
