Advent woofers - Maestro vs Legacy

Currently, one of my favorite sets of speakers I have at home are Advent Legacies; very easy speaker to listen to. Over the past year I've done several restorative upgrades. I refinished the woodwork, recapped with metalized polypropylene caps, new binding posts to accept banana plugs, and refoamed. When I refoamed, I reinstalled the paper trim rings. I always disliked the paper rings, but they look much better than an open basket. On several of the Advent models, Advent included nice trim rings made of plastic or foam. I aquired a set of Maestros that needed refoaming, so I can get the trim rings. I refoamed them and was going to switch out the woofers, and I noticed the Maestro woofer has a magnet that is a half inch larger in diameter that the Legacy (4.5 vs 4.0). Since I really like the sound of what I have, I just used the trim rings (before and after pics attached).

Interesting point that they used different 10 inch woofers in the two models. Its been pointed out that the Babies and Laurates are different- I'd assume rhe Graduate and Prodigies are different too.

I'll list the refoamed Advent Maestros woofers on AK Marketplace in case someone can use them.

Nice job using the correct surrounds and keeping the original woofers. :thumbsup:

Don’t judge a speakers sound quality on the size of its magnet.
 
FWIW, I’ve found that the Maestros seem lame until you hit them with an amp at 100+ wpc. They really wake up and sound great then.

Ive not noticed that effect in the Legacy.

That may be the effect of the larger magnets.
 
The Legacy and Maestro are under rated speakers. I used to be able to pick them up cheap, restore them, and sell them on, but never for that much. Now anything "vintage" carries a price premium, so they may go up in value.

I've always been fond of the Jensen era Advents and have found some simple mods that really make them perform. The only ones of the series that I haven't owned are the 6003, Maestro, Graduate, and Legacy 3.

I'm hunting for a nice set of Maestros; hopefully one will show up locally this year. I'd also like to get a Legacy 3 to experiment/experience the effect of the dual voice coil and the 8/6 ohm switching on the unit.

I have a pristine set of Heritages, but prefer the sound of the Legacy - so far it's my favorite of the bunch - they're keepers.
