Advents Refurbished

I refurbished my Advent Prodigy II's that I picked up at GW for $24.99. New foam surrounds came from AK member Re-Edger. They sound pretty gosh darn good and they look nice, too!

1. Removed woofers from cabs and removed old rotted surrounds.
2. Used shims to center voice coil. Trimmed shims to fit the smaller voice coil.
3. Glued new foam surround using supplied glue to speaker cone first and let dry.
4. Glued foam surround to speaker flange and let dry.
5. Glued original gaskets onto foam surround and speaker flange.
6. Sanded solid oak speaker tops and bottoms.
7. Generously applied Minwax English Chestnut to oak tops and bottoms.
8. Wiped excess stain.
9. Applied Watco Danish Oil for a harder finish.
10. Replaced old grill cloth with new black speaker cloth from local fabric store.
11. Scientifically tested speakers for sound performance. (I used my ears )
12. Tested some more.
13. Drank a beer.
14. Tested some more. Still sounded great!

Bravo! Very good job indeed! I ended up putting black burlap around my cabs and refinishing the tops, they came out nice as well!

I have those in my main system, except mine are the original Baby Advents. Very nice speakers, well worth refoaming. Very nice!

I've got a pair of those sitting in the closet that I refoamed and restained the tops and bottoms. One of the first pair of speakers I found a few years back when I started getting back into the older stuff. Man, the things I've come across since then. Nice sounding little speakers and very forgiving of what you play thru them.

You did a great job on those too, BTW...

Those look very nice, and I know the pair that passed through my hands on that long upgrade trail were very very nice.
Only thing - I think the wood is solid pecan, rather than oak, if memory serves.

I picked up the small clamps at Harbor Freight specifically for this purpose. I think it came with 18 individual ones like the ones in the picture plus 4 mediums size ones. They worked great with just enough clamping power without squeezing out all of the glue. $3.99 for the whole bunch. Comes in a clear plastic cannister.

Clothes pins work well.

The only thing I did not do was a re-cap but they put sure put out some good sound for small bookshelf units just as they are.
