advice for decent affordable record clamps

you should be able to hear improvements on thin record pressings and mildly warped records when they are clamped better to the platter...

Very interesting. I think I'd like to try one just to see if I can tell the difference...if I can find one for a good price that is. I've seen machined ones on various websites for many hundreds of dollars, that just seem ridiculous to me but whatever floats yer boat I guess :)

Second the Michells! I have two and like them both - they use a similar mechanism to the Sota I-Clamp for clamping and are cheaper.

If you have lots of money and want to spend it on something that's not only functional but beautiful, sounds good to me. I usually have to settle for functional.
 
I guess you guys overlooked my mention of the $1800 solid ebony record clamping device. Now that makes my $265 Basis clamp look like the budget model.

What you need is the Deluxe Servo Electronic Record Clamp by the Jacobson Company. You simply place the clamp over the spindle onto the record--it's a passive fit. You then press the "ON" button and thousands of tiny, fingerlike projections grab on to the spindle while simultaneously exerting just the right amount of pressure onto the record label. The pressure is distributed perfectly and determined by instantaneous feedback on the thickness, flex, and warp, if any, of the record. Press "OFF" and it instantly unclamps. At only $6,500 it would make the perfect Father's Day gift. :thmbsp:

Yes, it's a clamp and JUST a clamp - not a weight. It's pretty lightweight - good for suspended tables or otherwise. My use is really just to cure warped records and get some firm contact between the record and the platter. The Michel works perfectly in this regard.

KAB clamp

I use the KAB rubber clamp with the bubble level in the top and while nothing great to look at, it works well. IIRC it goes for about 25 bucks.
 
Get your self a plastic or metal jar lid and drill a 17/64 hole in the dead center I tried a 9/32 and it was just a tad on the loose side on the spindle of my Technics SL1800MKII so I tried a 17/64 bit, and presto perfect fit. If your nervous about drilling and mucking it up try some old jar lids the plastic or metal ones that's what I did till I got it rite.
I tried the KAB clamp and it was a pita plus it messed up the labels on my LP's left a dam ring mark plus it didn't hold as well as the metal jar lid.
