Advice Needed: Marantz 2270 vs 2275

I'd appreciate advice on whether to restore a recently purchased Marantz 2270 that needs work (estimates run $300-600) or whether to purchase a Marantz 2275 that seems to be in better shape. The seller wants about $400.

Going to look at the 2275 tomorrow. If I decide to get it, I'll sell the 2270.

Using the 2270's Phono input, one channel is softer than the other. FM works, but only in mono. FM light is out. Tape input works. Aux works with a CD. The power button's broken. All the other lights work.

I opened it up last night and it's pretty clean inside--no dust or rust. I didn't see any bulging capacitors.

I played it for two-three hours. Flaws aside, it sounds great. My jaw dropped when I put on Miles Davis' "Miles in the Sky, first the LP then the CD.

Last night, I saw a Marantz 2275 on craigslist. It had been listed for a month, but it's still for sale. The seller says everything works fine and he recently had it re-lamped. I know these two receivers are from the same "family." Does anyone have any thoughts about whether one would be better than the other?

The 2275 will handle inefficient 4 ohm loads better than the 2270 will. I've had a few 2270's in tip top shape and none of them could handle AR3a speakers very well when pushed, they kind of ran out of steam. They were great with 8 ohm loads like the AR2ax and the KLH Six though, so I guess it depends on what you're planning to use for speakers.

IMO the 2275 is a more desirable receiver, but keep in mind that even though it may be working fine it will most likely need some work soon as these beauties are getting older.
 
Prices seem to be going up up up, especially for a serviced 2275. IMO, it's a great unit, but will almost certainly need some service if you want it to last and sound right. Properly aligned, the tuner is very good and quite sensitive.
 
Years ago, some felt the 22x5s were in general better than the 22x0 series, but the 2270 is pretty much THE Marantz that many aspire to, so if you don't want it someone else certainly does.

I'd probably opt for the 2275 just because I liked my 2265B quite a bit.

^^^^^^^^^ ConradH Knows his stuff. I have a 2275 and it is great! It will need servicing though for sure.
 
For you...in this case...I'd recommend the 2275. Listen to it first and make sure it's what he says it is. Good luck.
 
I have both.

I prefer the 2275. (I actually have 3 of them.) She's a baby "hammer". Plenty of oomph! Full on "Marantz" sound.

The 2270 is a cleaner, less colored sounding unit. Less of the "Marantz" warmth.

Both are highly desirable. Both do wonderful things, but in a different way.

Both are worth a full restoration.
 
FM mono is probably just because the bulb is out. The bulb completes the stereo circuit in most Marantz receivers. Power supply and phono board recap and transistor replacement (known bad transistors) should be less than the new unit.

Thanks for the input, guys. I also exchanged e-mail with a guy who works on Marantz receivers and he was high on the 2275. Now all I need is one of you to tell my wife why I should go ahead and pull the plug. :-\
 
Update: I bought the Marantz 2275. It seems in great shape, all original parts, but it's had new lamps. Plus he came down a little on the price, which was nice.

I was only able to listen to one side of an LP last night and several songs off the Big Star CD box set but it sounded pretty good. I don't have the hi-fi vocabulary to describe the difference between it and the Luxman R115 I've done most listening to over the last 20+ years, but I think I like the sound of the Marantz better.

And, to further update, I bought parts (new power switch and knob) for the Marantz 2270, as well as a can of De-Oxit. After two hours, which included a rough-and-ready FM alignment, I now have two working Marantz receivers. Can't decide which one sounds best so, for now, I'm keeping both!

Cool! Gotta love Big Star, especially Number One Record ("Thirteen" and "When My Baby's Beside Me" my favorites). Some of Chris Bell's solo stuff was really good too, though nobody appreciated it at the time. If you haven't seen it check out the documentary film on them called "Nothing Can Hurt Me", really interesting though a bit depressing.

Great that you now have both a 2270 and 2275, two of the legendary classics!
