Advice on Geneva Sound System Model L

Until now, I'd never heard of the Geneva SS Model L. Where do you live?

Could the inferior sound quality be result of a defect in your model? If your CD drive (perhaps due to shipping) was damaged, it could be possible that the membrane or the speakers themselves were damaged due to the same error?
However, if everything is functional, then what do you mean by the sound quality being "not too good"? I saw a fair number of review sites (including whathifi) highly rate this speaker.

However, the Geneva Sound System Model XL was rated lower than its small counterpart - the Geneva Sound System Model L - (could be because of its minuscule increase to performance for a large increase in price):

Also, what speakers - could be used or old - (with an amplifier build in) would you recommend in the price range of 200-500?

I can't say anything about the L, but I think the XL just did not have the clarity, sound stage, bass or dynamic range of even a low-end group of separates. And that's too bad, because as an active system it had real potential. But for the CD player, the build quality and finish were amazing.
I don't have a lot of experience with active systems, but I would be looking at the new Apple HomePod, or whatever it's called, as well as the little active JBL monitors (LSR I think). Also, there are some other very popular active monitors that I can't recall the name of; perhaps Genelec?
