advice re p-mount turntables

I have used the same Technics SL--B92 for 30 years. It is a P-mount, currently with an Ortofon 320 cartridge. I am thinking of upgrading, either to a Technics SL-M2 or SL-MA1. (These are both P-mounts, despite what the archived Technics list says.)

1. If I did that and used the same Ortofon cartridge: do you think it would sound any different?

2. Are there any P-mount turntables (with auto shutoff) superior to the SL-M2 and SL-MA1?

I would appreciate any advice.

There is one, the Technics SL-1000 Mk III. Which uses a SP-10 Mk III motor. Which is manual only. The models you mention are among the elite in T4p mount pivoted arm models, the SL-QX 300 is another one to look for. And yes, you'd see improvements in performance.

I own both a SL-M3 and a SL-MA1, and they are both fine turntables. I know of no better full auto T4P turntables than these two, but I might be biased. You should be able to hear the difference between these M series turntables and your current one, using the same cartridge.

By the way, the SL-M2 was offered with a half-inch mount s-shaped arm in some countries, which may have led to the confusion in the list.

Yes, and agreed with wholeheartedly. The SL-M3 and SL-MA1 are the best pivoted arm automatic T4p mount turntables you can own. And compared with your existing one, a very major upgrade. Yes, you can hear the difference.

You can "see" the difference too! Beautiful turntables IMHO.

Small clarification: the SL-MA1 has a pivot arm, but the SL-M3 has a linear tracking arm. The SL-M3 is also unusual in that the arm is on the left, not across the back like the other Technics linear trackers.
