Advice to buy a pair of JBl Jubal speakers

Dear friends, I came across with a pair of JBl L65 Jubal, all the drivers appear to be in good shape, I tested and they sounds good. the cabinets require some work and the grills are missing. However, the owner told me that they use to be part of the sound system in an old bar. So my Q is: Should I buy a set of speakers that might have a lot of hours of use? or that's not something relevant for this type of speakers. The guy wants 1250usd for the pair. Tks for your advice

For Value questions Should go to dollar’s and sense
Being that they were in a bar back in the day
Smoke filled
Most important thing with Jbls in particular
Is the original drivers are of primary concern
The 077 tweeters alone are sought after
And many pair have been parted out just for them With out the original Bluish tint
Diafrghams are No longer available
How are the foam surrounds? Installed correctly and how long ago,
How bad are the cabinets?

Here is a picture so you can have an idea of the cosmetic condition, the owner also told me he changed one of the tweeters.

Those are the first generation L65, my least favorite (due to the low power handling with the first series woofer). There was an L65, L65A, and L65B, the A and B have the woofer raised and bass port on the bottom, a better layout for most home uses.

The replaced tweeter would worry me, if the tweeters both have the clear lucite wedge in them and you can see a blue diaphragm in both, that is okay.

Last is the woofer in the photo, the L65 never had that pleated style surround, and the surround was always attached to the back of the cone, I am concerned whether those are original woofers, original cones, and whether they are worth as much even if original as the surrounds are not correct nor correctly mounted (irreversible).

They are worth something, just not what a complete and correct L65 series would be worth.

<edit>

Looking at the woofers’ long tinsels, I am pretty sure that those are original woofers and cones, just have the pleated / cloth surrounds installed on the front of the cone instead of the correct foam installed to the back. A significant hit in value, although they might sound fine.

With the lead-wires dressed that far up onto the cone (the leads coming out of the dust cap, go a long distance out of the dust cap)- that is most likely a JBL 126A woofer. That would be the correct woofer, for an original L65- albeit with a very incorrect fabric surround.

Regards,
Gordon.

Thank all for your great comments and advice, I decided to step away from the deal and keep searching for something better.

There are hundreds of choices, Altec's JBL's Klipsch, and many others.
What region of the country are you?
room size and power source?

Hey Bob, the issue is that I live in Colombia (not Columbia. lol) so the options here are very limited in terms of vintage gear, that's why I was excited about those Jubal, because they are very rare to find in my home country. I started considering to import a pair from the US but Im not sure if I can trust on what you can find on ebay, specially if I cannot tested. So if you have any advice on where I could find something good and at reasonable price I'll appreciate.
I have my system in a small living room and as power source I use a Pioneer SX-980.

Yea thats a whole different story.
You might spend the 25$ us and Join Barter Town here on AK.
I made a few Good buys here. Less Flippers, and more True Audiophiles who really care for HiFi
Shipping to your country? Who Knows better than you.
Have you considered buying Good quality Components , and building your own Cabinets?
PM me if interested
BTW That Pioneer receiver is almost 45 yrs old. You do know it's over due for a rebuild?

Tks Bob I think that's a great idea, I think it worth spend those 25$.
For the shipping I use a mailbox system, however, due to the weight of the speakers I'm thinking about sending them to my brother's house in Florida and wait for him to bring them to Colombia.
The receiver certainly needs a recap or rebuild. I wish I could find someone who can sell me a recap kit with good quality components because in Colombia we just find cheap chinese garbage. Someone told me about a site call Old radio parts, do you know them?

It's best to go to the Pioneer Forum for Rebuild advise. Working on SS receivers is very specialized,
Only something I would trust a highly qualified Tech to do.
Yes having things sent to Florida would be a great option for you.

No way I would pay $1250 for the pair. I had a pair in better shape with correct surrounds that I ended selling them for about that price recently. If they were a bargain then I would buy them even with the issues, but this is not even close to a bargain. I'm sure things are a bit harder to find in Colombia but maybe there's some cool old equipment out there.

Thank you so much for providing a price reference for those speakers.
