Very cool, djv. Frank was very diverse and prolific. It could take a lot of discipline to get into his music. But all you need is your foot in his door.

Hey you guys, I've been net shopping and have been eyeballing the "You Can't Do That On Stage" series. I saw a complete set on that auction site. Are these good recordings and a cool way to get into this? I love GOOD live records, but most are pretty poor IMO. I'm guessing this series isn't very good (recording wise) since I didn't see anyone give them the thumbs up. Thoughts?
YCDTOS are all pretty good to very good quality recordings. They tend to be live variations of the studio music. The series has its high points and low points. Overall it is worth picking up. But beware, after getting them you are going to have to go buy all of his other recordings so you can know where the variations of the songs came from.

Another suggestion: You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore, Vol. 2, The Helsinki Concert.
Me and friend Pete listened to it last night for the first time. This 2-CD set is so good I could kick myself for not buying it years ago!
A great ensemble of musicians including George duke and Chester Thompson. Talk about professionals! Some of Thompsons drum solos are astounding, and there are a few. Friend Pete, who is a drummer, thought it was Ansley Dunbar and had never heard of Chester Thompson. Very impressive musician!
The band is tight throughout the entire album. Zappa interjects some tunes from his earlier albums, too. And then there is stuff I've never heard before which is mind blowing.
Oh, it was recorded in 1974! Worth picking up for sure....
