Advise using vintage gear in modern setup

Hello fellow members of audiokarma, I am searching for a way to use my pioneer sx-880 in a modern setup. I basically want a way that I can stream music to it. Hook my tv up to it through a optical input. I have looked that a network streamer might be what I am looking for, but I also want a way to control the volume from a remote. Is it possible to use the play or record inputs for tape to bypass my built in preamp and use an external one

first off, it doesn't have an optical input. you would need to buy an adapter and plug it into an aux input

That's exactly how you would connect that streamer as well,

you could use a rec input to connect an external preamp but it will NOT bypass the internal preamp. you would be running through both preamp stages

hopefully that external preamp would have a remote volume control.

what happens if I run a network streamer with a preamp into a receiver? What happens when you run a preamp into a preamp? How would having two points of volume control work ?

if your receiver has pre out/main in you connect it there, your receiver becomes a power amp, none of its controls will work, the new preamp will have those.

define "preamp".

What happens when you run a preamp into a preamp?
you have dual series controls of everything, two volume controls ,two tone controls, etc. you also pass though any distortion from the first to the second to be amplified.

How would having two points of volume control work ?
it's tricky. set the second one to as loud as you want. then control it from the first one..

Okay but my receiver doesn’t have those , so how can I run a network streamer that also has remote volume control , because from what I understand any sort of dac or streamer with volume control is also a preamp. And apparently running a preamp into an aux input is bad?

If you want specific answers you've got to provide the specific information needed to answer them.

Like, exactly what "network streamer" are you referring to, Link, please

and, I'm not too sure that you are aware that there are several different types of "preamps" and how they are used.

i want to use this so I can stream music to my sx-880 , as well as hook up my tv through the optical port. The problem is that it is also listed as a preamp , and I want to be able to use the remote from this device to control the volume.

Here's a pic of the unit the OP is considering, not sure how he can pull off what he wants with the SX-880

I BELIEVE he'll be feeding it's pre outs to the tape in on the receiver.

and, yeah. he'll be feeding the output of that preamp into the preamp input of his 880r.

ain't no way around that.

Is there any way I can do what I want with this receiver since it doesn’t have main in jacks? I just want a way to have volume control and digital inputs
I believe that question has been answered several times, starting in post 2.

Can't help if you don't like the answer.

it is what it is.
