I have a chance to pick up a pair of AEI Evolution 1 speakers next week at what will probably be a steal price of around $20 or less for the both. Are they worth the trouble to refurbish? What is the value of this make and model of speaker in good condition?
The cabinets look good from what I can see of them in pictures. I haven't been able to examine the speakers personally yet so I'm assuming the worst case is that the drivers are good but will need new surrounds and there may be some work needed on the baffles to clean them up.
This is at a local auction and I've gotten some great deals there in the past. A few months ago I picked up a pair of Cerwin-Vega R12 loudspeakers for $30 for the pair. After installing a $20 (for both, not each) woofer driver surround foam kit they're now my favorite speakers.
This is kind of short notice, I realize. I need to know whatever I can find out about them between now and next Tuesday. I can inspect them Tuesday (04 Jan 2021) and the auction is that evening. If I find a deal breaker when I look at them I'll drop the idea of working on them and won't buy. Deal breaker = non-original woofers or tweeters, broken or punctured cones, bad stains & de-lamination of the veneers, etc.
As I understand it these AEI branded speakers are a house brand of Cizek Speakers sold by an audio equipment chain, comparable to the Cizek Model 1. Any input on that, the value and the quality of these speakers would be appreciated.
