Aesthetix Rhea and AR PH7

Can anybody who has listened to these provide some insight. I realise there is a little bit of a price gap between the two. Of course any other phono amps of similar quality are welcome as suggestions!

My main concerns are;

1. Rhea: Noisy with low gain cartridges?
2. AR: Not enough gain (57db). Would that restrict me to 0.5mV +?

Thanks

HI,
This comparison is not quite what you are looking for but it might be helpful. For many years I have been using my Audio Research SP-11 Mk II phono stage with low output (.2 mV) cartridges. It is dead quiet and a great performer. I had never heard a better one. My only caveat is it is a hybrid phono amp using an FET as the input amplifier. I really never heard any problems but I was very curious about how a pure tube phono amp might sound.

Like you, I was very concerned about noise in a pure tube design especially with my preferred low output cartridges. But after exchanging several emails with an Aesthetix Io owner on the Vinyl Asylum I got the courage up to buy a used Rhea. I paid $2500 for a mint piece.

First, it is not as dead quiet as my SP-11. But it is definitely quiet enough. The very low level noise never intrudes during music passages. In fact, even when no record is being played I don't notice any noise unless I specifically listen for it. The channels are identical. I have two turntables, one with a .2 mV cartridge and the other with a .6 mV cartridge. Noise is not a problem with either one. This issue is put to rest as far as I am concerned. But your sensitivity may be greater than mine.

Next, the sound is absolutely first rate. It character fits the remainder of my ARC system. It's detailed without being etched. Resolution is umatched in my experience and the SP-11 was damned good. Good as these things are, it is its sound staging that really gets your attention. Wonderful.

Being a lazy audiophile, creature comforts are important and the Rhea is hard to beat. I'm sure you have read about its multi-cartridge and remote capability. All I can say is I can't imagine an easier Pre amp to use especially if you use more than one turntable. All this plus it looks good. One thing though. It is a fairly large unit especially in depth. Check your shelves.

I give it a first class rating and I'm very glad I took the plunge.

I hope this helps, Sparky

The Rhea I have spent a little time with is dead quiet using a linn low output cartridge. Same for the PH7 which was using a benz cartridge.
