After The Marantz 2600

We all know that the Marantz Model 2600 was one of the greatest receivers ever built (don't argue, just take my word for it). Yes, it had some reliability problems as time when on, but the goals was simple: make it the very best. One recently sold on E-Bay for $4,000.00, more than twice its list price in 1979!!

Well, the 2600 came and went. And, Marantz was taken over by Phillips. The "Dark Ages" began. So, what was the follow-up to the 2600 once Phillips got invovled? Well, you're looking at it, the 1979 Marantz SR9000G (150w x 2), with only half the power of the 2600. Of course, Quartz-Synthesized tuning was the "big thing" for 1979 and the TOTL Marnatz had to have that, with its "CompuTuner". Although it would go up to 150 watts, the LED power meters only went as far as 130, the frist time I've ever seen that!

Beautiful! This is why I love digital look, color mixing of red, blue, amber, green that couldn't be done with analog (?). Can the FM fine tune to increment of 0.05

It just grives me to think that the big company's ON THE TURN OF THE 80'S.. thought profit was a better OPTION than quality & workmanship.

Sorry but that's my thoughts MATE they were sad times..But hey!

Really nice pictures, if you took them you have quite a talent.

As far as the actual receiver the internals look a lot cheaper to me compared to the prior years and damn they took the gyro tuning away :dunno: :dunno: :dunno: What were they thinking!

I bought a 2218 yesterday. It will be interesting to see if I can get as much for it on eBay as that seller gets for his SR9000. It should be pretty close!

This one doesn't being the first generation but the next model, the SR8100DC does. For some reason the SR8100DC had a massive drop in power output, however, going from the 150 of the SR9000G to only 70, just like the 2270 of ten (10) years before. I just don't get it. But, that's what it was the "Dark Ages" for Marantz.

I like to collect the TOTL Marantz receivers. The only ones I don't have are the 19 and the 2600 and, of course, they're the most expensive! Some day!

I totally agree that the SR9000G went down the wrong path. It's clearly one of those "cost-cutter" specials if you compare it with, for example, a 2325 of only 5 years before. But, I must admit, the cosmetics of it are certainly alluring! And, when I had is benchtested at 150 wRMS/ch, I was shocked! I was figuring on about 90.

Please let us know! That SR9000G will probably fetch about $200.00. That's what mine cost me.....with 42 bids....it was NASTY! A decent 2218 should get about $100.00, so, they'll be pretty close. $100 these days is not much of a difference at all!
 
I've never heard 1 of these and internal layout does not = sound quality but, the Marantz looks like a rat's nest compared to the Philips Lab Series that I'm trying to corner the market on. Easy to tell these were not designed by the boys at Magavox who did the Lab series in Tennessee. Amazing that the same company can put out such differently laid out and engineered products, especially when Marantz was supposed to be the premo line; beginning to think the Lab Series was the TOTL for Philips and the Marantz the money maker just selling on its name by the time that Philips took it and ran with it. Defintely not the"quality goes in before the name goes on" line any longer. As I said, though, it still be a fine product sonically.
 
The SR9000G is not really a bad sounding receiver at all. Plenty powerful. Does not have that classic Marantz build quality. About the best thing in the receiver as far as build is that transformer, thats one hefty device, considering the rest of the unit is not terribly heavy it accounts for the bulk of the weight too. Assuming it works this is not a bad receiver assuming it can be had for a good price. Supposedly its hard to track down service info for it. Mine gave up the ghost and smoked a resistor on the amp board for no apparent reason, but I should be able to get it going again one of these days, gotta finish the cleaning job on that GTE 2600 first. While this is not the Marantz of old you could do a lot worse. Look beyond the name on the case and get the fact out of your mind that its not the Marantz of old, listen to it and its just fine. Looks pretty nice too.
 
Hmm that ebay auction hasn't even gotten an opening bid at $80 and 171 views. I think $200 is a very long shot. Maybe $100 if the seller is lucky. Personally with that 80's styling I wouldn't give you $50 for it. Seems like the 171 viewers agree with me.

That is the amazing thing about E-Bay.....the variation in interest. My SR9000G had 42 bids.....what would be totally cool is getting a legitimate 150 wRMS/ch receiver from a major manufacturer for only $80.00!! I'll have to look at that auction again and make sure there's no reserve. Tomorrow might be my lucky day!! I know styling is a personal matter, but I think these babies with their gold finish look totally COOL!!
 
I'd say if you can get it ~$150 it is still a good buy. This baby weighs 50 lbs, and for digital age that is HEAVY! Quality wise I'd say it is comparible or even better than all Marantz classics (as we all know these Marantz with light bults are so damn easy to burn out!) It is all personal taste and doesn't reflect true sounding power IMHO.

Searching Google and here is a reply from an individual.

hotgas -- You and I are finally on the same side of something!!! GREAT!!! I've always admired your intelligence and open-mindedness and it's great to be a compatriot and hold off these Barbarian hordes! LOL You'll be interested to note that the MSRP on the SR9000G in 1979 was approximately $900.00.....what would the equivalent of that be? If no AK'er bids on that E-Bay unit....it's MINE! Heheheheheheh.........
 
I think you are a great guy with an open mind too. I enjoy looking at your TOTL components which I am drooling all the time but have no room to go after them unless opportunity comes. That Marantz costs $100 more than my Pioneer SX3900! Woww.. Good luck and let us know what's gonna happen tomorow.

Excuse me there " hotgas" they are easy to burn out?! what...huh....hello, did I miss something here! Unless you're one of these dumb, dumbs who stack componets ontop of each other without no regards to ventilation then yes I can see your twisted logic of these bulbs burning out. I have had bulbs lasting as long as 25 years mister.
