Aircraft Nuts: Guess what the @#*&! is wrong with this CL ad?

Well, if you are having trouble seeing my posted URL above or it is already showing as "flagged", I blame it solely on my lack of knowledge (so far) of operating my new Apple iMac. :scratch2: :D

I just got my new computer up and running several days ago. So, my Apple iMac skills lag far, far behind my many years of hammering on a Wndows-based PC unit. It's just the small stuff that is slowing me down. You know - Windows PC one way, Apple does it another.

I can still pull up the URL and it is not "flagged". Feel free to chime in and put me on the straight-and-narrow path to rectify my Mac error(s).

What the CL ad shows is a picture of a very raked chopper (Think Orange County Choppers lineage) taken, presumably, at an air show. The OCC-type chopper is powered by a 7-cylinder radial aircraft engine. If the photo is real, it would be a radical (and radial) modified bike.

I copied and pasted the body of the ad below:

"hi, i have this bike, with a radial airplane engine from a P51 mustang.
i am getting a divorce and she is not going to get it in the divorce
my number is 817 455 1077 ask for mike. i also have a boat that i will give away for free."

Now, just for fun, what's wrong with the content of the ad? It should be easy for North American gurus of WWII Pursuit aircraft.

Simple, look at the frontal area of any pursuit aircraft, where the he## are they going to put a radial engine, in a spacewarp? The wind resistance would bleed off speed prohibitively.

I really can't even envision a real P51 engine mated to ANY 2 wheeler...

Monster garage converted a semi to a "motorcycle", and they had to go with a trike configuration, DESPITE their strong wishes to go with only TWO wheels....

Short answer.... never was a radial engine in (or on) a P51....

But if someone wanted to cook his privates by hanging a radial aircraft engine on a chopper frame, well.... it takes all types.....

You could CONCIEVABLY actually put a Rolls-Royce Merlin in a a bike, but I doubt if you could make it work & run for anything but very short distances..It would be one helluva display, though...

Anyone seen a Merlin in the flesh? It is a big-ass engine. Sadly, it is not a radial. All the cylinders sit nicely in a V...

Yep, both the Merlin & the Allison are physically BIG engines- weighing in the neighborhood of 1500 lbs, & 27 liters capacity. I wouldn't want to try to ride a bike that had one of those monsters in it...

18 MPG w/a 502....Yeah, uh-huh...I gots a Bridge I want you should buy, too...

To be honest, that would be about the least of my concerns if I were riding that beast... :D

It's not your computer skills, it's the ad itself. It's been flagged down. What you're seeing on your computer is the old version in your browser cache. Try hitting reload/refresh when you go to the ad.

There _are_ radial engine motorcycles, two of them that I know of. Both custom jobs using very small radials for light aircraft.

Keep in mind that nearly all the fastest US piston engine fighters were radial engined. Black Widow, Tigercat, Bearcat, Fireball (well, sort of), FG2 Corsair, etc. Of course the Mustang used a Packard/RR Merlin.

^^^^^^^

The 2nd one is freakin' cool!

Not a plane engined bike, but a scary fast 200+MPH one -

Has a Viper V10 in it.

(Boss Hoss looks like a genius by comparison.)

John in MA,

You are correct about my browser refresh. I thought I was refreshing, etc. in my troubleshooting, but in my haste on a new computer.... :o

The blue bike in your bottom photo is the exact chopper that I was referring to in my initial post.

Thanks

You are referring to the Rhone rotary, in which the shaft is fixed and the whole engine rotates :-)

The P-51 Mustang, as has been intimated above (but maybe not explicitly enough) used a large, powerful Rolls-Royce or Allison V-12 engine... not a radial :-)

I've seen Allisons at Tractor Pulls, it generally comes down between them & the Jets. Sometimes, a 454 will sneak in, but they just don't have anywhere near the suds a good Allison does...

Just guessin' here, but the engines appear identical. (at least similar) Could possibly be Jacobs radials...7 cyl, about 225-275hp. Another possibility would be Russian M-14s...readily available surplus.
