AIWA XD-A1U

Bought an aiwa XD-A1U from the auction site and did a spot of cleaning. Interesting machine: bare-bones DVD player. Being an early-2000s aiwa that means it is likely a clone of a Sony DVD player. Was pleasantly surprised by decent-sounding internal DAC / RCA stereo outputs, but I really bought it because I wanted to use the digital Coaxial output with my Modi 5.

Washed the case, front panel and CD tray. Didn’t solve all the blemishes, but the tray itself was very dusty. Gave the interior a blow-out, which helped with some dirt that had collected on the pcb edge below the control buttons. Also removed coppery dust below an induction coil on the power PCB.

I’ll be back with exterior pictures, but for now here’s some of the pictures I took.

I did use canned air to remove the coppery particles from the coil immediately above the “DANGER! MAINS VOLTAGE” marking. I’ve never seen that and I wonder what caused it?

Sanyo mechanism with a decent shot of the pickup.

Back of the display board. You can see the dust by the screws in the DVD pcb.

I just realized I should have indicated something more descriptive in the thread title. Perhaps “AIWA XD0-A1U - photos and impressions”?

Found out that the Stereo DAC is a TI PCM1742 (produced 2002-2005; still an active product on digikey). Compares well to the Modi 5 through my system.

Also, I think the copper coil at L501 is actually the main transformer.
