I picked up a KENWOOD KA-6000 amp (45 watts/channel). It certainly is not a KA-600 or KA-7100 but it is what it is.
The AK forum came through again. I did a search on AK and found the following thread.

I read about the KA-6000 being noisey. I had not listened with volume down but did and could not believe how noisey it is. My receivers all are dead silent with the volume down. The tread recommended changing out two 470 ohm resistors with 1.82 k resistors. A trip to an electronic house and 25 cents later plus 30 minutes to change them out and what a difference. Silence as far as my old ears can tell. Thanks to AK member tcdriver for figuring out the problem and sharing the solution with all.
