just received this unit and does not sound to bad but I think it has never been cleaned I cleaned the heads with alcohol but when played lots of base have to back the bass off on the amp all the way
capstan was really crudded up but clean up nicely sometimes the auto shut off arm does not work unless I lift it and let go quickly

any suggestions on cleaning or more

Sounds like your 4000DS has been stored for an eternity and it's dirty and gummed up.
It seems like it just needs a good and thorough clean.
If you are handy and know how to remove the face plate, Deoxit the controls and switches properly and clean the dried, hardened grease on the linkages, then re grease them.
The shut off arm will function once you've done this.
