Akai 4000ds noise

Hi, (also posted on th forum)

I need opinion of you experts. I have an Akai 4000ds that I have cleaned pots, switches, heads etc. and it seems to work very well except for a static-like noise that is random, mostly on left channel. See the video below. It only does it when monitor is set to tape. I think it is also getting worse. Is this a case of the bad 2SC458 transistors? If so, how many will I need and will any KSC1845 do? I'm fairly experienced with electronics but wanted to check if anyone has had the same problem.

Thanks very much.

2SC458 transistors were in all three Akai tape recorders I've had. GX-4000, CR-83D, GX650. 14 were in the GX-4000, 2 in the CR-83D and 8 (I think) in the GX-650.

With the 3 decks, all 2SC458's were replaced and that fixed their problems - noise, intermittent, or dead channels.

Transistors are cheap. Buy a bunch so you'll have enough. 100 of either KSC1845 or KSA1815 can bought from Digikey for under $20. Probably same from Mouser.
