My wife sent me to pick up a kids playhouse from marketplace, end up talking to the guy about audio stuff. You want a receiver? Says he. I want it out of my house, clearing out storage. Me dad got it cleaned and recapped before putting it away a few years ago. Sure, says I. Expected a hollow cd like sound, actually reminds me more of Marantz sound, slightly warm powerful sound for 35wpc. Sounds better than my luxman l-410 for some glam rock and low-fi synth rock records. Anybody else enjoying late 70s Akai gear? Might have been a Market penetration attempt to crack to top tier. Sorry for the obnoxious thread title, making fun of all those "look at me" thrifters. Are these Akais well thought of?

You did great as Akai makes some really good stuff. They are quite famous for their reel to reels. Back in the day my friend had an Akai monster power amp and it was a really nice piece.

I think Akai had a smaller market share than most brands. Here in my part of Canada Akai was pretty well known and taken on par with the other name brands of the day such as Pioneer, Sony, JVC, etc.
